Karl Malone - Game 5 of 98 Finals

It's just unfortunate that this was the point in his career that he decided he was a shooting guard.

Prodigy . . . my love for you cannot be expressed digitally. Let your mind wander where it may . . .

Malone was a very clutch player. It's too bad that Hakeem and Jordan were a bit clutcher.

I never thought of Malone as being all that clutch. In fact, I remember him missing some crucial freethrows now and then. He was just solid all the time, as opposed to being clutch.

Malone wasn't as "unclutch", as many people believe. Even in game 6 he played very well (31 pts), Jordan made a nice play stealing the ball although as Hot Rod said, he fouled Malone during the scuffle for the ball and wasnt called for it.

Malone chocked at the line in game one vs. Chicago in the Finals. Hardly clutch.

(Awaiting rationalizations and excuses.)

Whether Malone "chocked" at the line or not, the Jazz hardly make the playoffs. Even worse and far stupider is when people boil an absolutely amazing 19-year career down to one or two plays.

I love Malone as much as any Jazz fan. I followed him from the day he was drafted until he left the team. He was always clutch during the regular season and had moments where he was like this game during the finals. But he did have a tendency to miss big free throws when they were needed most. That said, I wouldn't have taken anyone else.

Oh come on. You should know by now how most Jazzfanz brains work.

A missed free throw in the first quarter and a missed free throw in crunch time all count the same. In every game you can go back an analyze every missed layup, missed free throw, bad turnover, etc. They ALL have an effect on the final outcome.

That video sure made me miss the Mailmain. We were pretty damn spoiled. He nailed some tough jumpers. Played with finesse around the room. And also took it in with force. He often carried the team offensively. They essentially ran ever play to him, or through him. And he delivered. That, in itself, is clutch. Few players in the NBA are really capable of doing that...for multiple games in the freakin' NBA Finals. Karl carried a team with a piss poor, lousy f'n bunch of rejects. It pisses me off to no end that the Jazz got virtually no offensive production from Anderson, Eisley, Carr, Foster, Morris, Ostertag, and Keefe. Also, as I recall Stockton's production was down in the playoffs and he struggled at times. And why is no one is calling out St. Horney. He was nearly a non-factor in that series. Russell never seemed to step up either.

I'm not gonna call Stockton non-clutch even though his production was down (he was, afterall, initiating everything). But those other dudes were non-clutch. Kobe, MJ, Hakeem, etc. all had role players step up and help win big games. Karl was option the only reliable option for the Jazz in that series. MJ had Pippen, Kukoc, and other guys that would step up and deliver at times.

You throw in the fact the he had to carry a bigger offensive load than anybody in those years and this was a remarkable performance. A fact, that sadly escapes most Malone haters. I have mentioned this before, but that 98 team did not have a single 15-ppg player on it, except for Malone. After Malone, it was a huge dropoff to Hornacek. Stockton was well, always a reluctant scorer. Means, Malone had to shoulder a big load of the offensive responsibility and much more. And as the years went by he got crappier and crappier help thanks to the cheapasses running the FO. A washed up Manning, who was actually the best backup Malone had in quite a while, followed by Gilliam, Chilcutt and such.

I wonder how Boozer would have fared if he had the likes of Ostertag, Gilliam and Keefe starting alongside him.

If you swap Boozer for a productive Malone on this current Jazz team, they win at least 2 titles. At least.

That's not to say that the Jazz are better without Boozer, though. Just a testament to how incredible Malone was.
