“Hustle” (Juancho) Review

That was entertaining! I hadn't realized Juancho was that good-looking. He did a great job on and off the court. Fun to see all the NBA players/coaches.

Disappointed Clarkson didn't get a little more screen time.

Agreed! I just hope pretty boy is willing to put it all on the line off the bench this year and play some of that gritty hard nosed defense displayed in the film. Love to see what Clarkson could do with some starter’s minutes if Conley or Mitchell get moved as well.

So I think we should waive Juan at his current price but try and sign him to a multi year deal at a lower one. I think the movie plays a factor… he was a good rotation player before the movie… I think iirc there were some a bit upset he wasn’t in the best basketball shape and had taken some time off to shoot the movie. I wonder if there was a dip in his play that is somewhat related… then he bounced around last year before finding some PT with us. If we could get him on a two year BAE type deal I’d do it… I think we can get him on a one year minimum… after bouncing around I’m sure a guaranteed contract with a team that will likely use him is going to be desirable.

He didn’t get in the Celtics rotation… and you can see why now. I think we stumbled onto a cheap rotation player.

I know it’s only a movie, but it made me hate Anthony Edwards even more than I already did…
I know, he’s pretty good but Juancho was owning him by the end!;)

I’m thinking that Edwards had a pretty good smack talking mentor in Pat Bev!

Gave it a watch tonight. It's pretty much NBA 2K storyline movie edition complete with a rival villain, Edwards really eased into that role, almost a little too well if we are being honest, but yeah he and Juancho really did well. Sandler was great as well you can tell he has a passion for the sport and a lot of NBA people were in this, kind of wish we saw more jazz people. But Stockton gets a Kenny Smith line of looking like a insurance salesman but busting his azz. If you like training montages this is also the movie for you. 'Even Rocky had a montage', Sandler eventually yells Rocky!!!

All those street basketball scenes with Juancho playing the best defense us jazz fans have seen outside of Rudy had me really questioning if he was the secret weapon Bojan was talking about, you can't score on the guy. I was hoping they'd play up the fish out of water stuff a little more once Juancho comes over, him buying porn and trying all the cheese steaks but taking one bite was funny.

When I saw Ben Foster in this I'd thought they would play him up more as a villain. It was weird seeing him fully bald. The cute blonde SNL girl pops up randomly in moments throughout I wasn't sure what her role was it was kind of odd.

No.. we knew he was a rotation player all along. That’s why we traded Ingles for him. NAW was merely a throw-in even though all of the local media said he was going to be in the rotation.

Holy **** dude, Stockton has a cameo? I think I need to rewatch it by myself. When my wife is not taking a break to annoy me, she is either asking questions or narrating.

Always laugh at how the boy from Flash Forward, a Disney TV show I watched as a kid, could turn into this level of an actor. Just funny how things like that work out.

I also thought he'd be more a bad guy than he was, though I guess he kinda was since he fired Adam Sandler's character and seemed to actively root against Cruz totally out of spite and being correct.

Heidi Gardner is the SNL girl and her role felt really pointless. Like, it felt like she was set up to be Sanders' love interest and then they landed Queen Latifah to play the role of his wife, so they dropped it and didn't really know what else to do with her character lol

I think you’re both right in that he’s not guaranteed till the 30th of this month. And the fact that we’re over the cap and apparently not getting any traction on a possible Gobert trade makes the HH scenario a possibility I suppose. Dangerous game though with his decent performance last year and his high visibility due to the movie. I think in the end we do nothing and retain him at 7 mil a year. I think he’s going to fill some seats with his new celebrity and there’s always the chance he really gets into shape and lives up to some of that fictional hype.

Interesting backstories, thanks for that. Heidi is a Hottie!

For those that have been waiting to see what the latest Adam Sandler / Juancho Hernangomez collaboration has to offer, it is now available and streaming on Netflix. If you're a fan of the rags to riches "Rocky" genre (who isn't), you're likely to enjoy this one. Somewhat of a departure for Sandler as it falls more into the drama than comedy category, and therefore hard to compare to other Happy Madison productions. I'd say that it compares favorably with some of his best work, particularly since he started working exclusively for Netflix. It's also a treat for every NBA fan out there with appearances from scads of big names past and present.

For his part. Juancho is superb in his role as a down on his luck construction worker who spends his free time hustling at local playground courts. Sandler of course is the NBA scout (Sixers) that discovers him in Spain and takes it upon himself to bring him to the States (without any kind of commitment from the front office). It's a family friendly production with both parties having young daughters (Juancho a single father, Sandler married to Queen Latifa) which is noteworthy as a few of the Happy Madison productions I've seen on Netflix have been pretty raunchy. Other performances of note were Anthony Edwards as Juancho's trash talking main rival (projected top draft pick), Kenny the Jet Smith, nice little cameo from Robert Duvall and my favorite Jazzman, Jordan Clarkson. Check it out, let me know what you think!
wow, 36 uses of the F word is family-friendly?

I really think there is zero chance we keep him at that number. I don't think he gets more than a minimum elsewhere but likely has his pick of locations at the min... so maybe BAE or just knowing he has a rotation spot here push us to the top of the list.

We will get out of the tax this summer unless something too amazing to pass up comes along. Giving Juan his 7M makes that waaaaay tougher.

Really, that many F-bombs? So wouldn’t that require a second viewing to tabulate that? I apologize for the misjudgment then. In defense, I recently retired as a High School teacher and have become fairly impervious to the dreaded F-Bomb. You are correct however, after some googling I find it did get the R rating. I guess I’m just hopelessly out of touch with what shocks people any more. I mean, it is Adam frickin Sandler after all. Okay, here ya go “The Do-Over”, TV Mature it says, not a lot of FBombs apparently but get ready for some raucous (including 3Way) sex scenes and fairly graphic violence. Go figure!

I hope we find a way to resign him then. His mix of shooting, quickness and length is gonna be hard to replace.
