What's new

13

Besides Memo, just three knuckleheads have worn the number. No wonder so many consider it unlucky.

For us parents, 13 is also the age we so look forward to with our children...the beginning of the dreaded teenage years!

Roger Braille had 13 steals last season...not counting the money he "stole" from the Miller family.

what an unlucky number, aside from memo.

meech: argued with the coach, created locker room drama, saw huge decline in play after he joined the jazz.

jax: locker room lawyering, may or may not have been the catalyist that led to john's retirement (and consequently, karl's departure to LA)

clark: brought his substance problems to SLC, part of the reason why he only ever played in two jazz games.

at least memo turned out ok.

while keon clark and john amaechi didn't pan out for the jazz, the pair was involved in bringing much of the current core to utah.

clark's insurance-covered salary was used in 2004 to allow the jazz to absorb tom guglotta's salary, a move that also brought the jazz the draft pick that became hayward. meanwhile, john amaechi was used similarly to allow the jazz to take on a glen rice salary dump. part of the compensation for eating rice's salary included a draft pick that (pavel podkolzine) that we traded for a future pick (linas kleiza) that we then traded to move up to #3 (deron williams) and ultimately traded that guy for favors, kanter, devin-then-marvin, and the GS pick.

memo's TPE also turned into mo williams. so....

guys who wouldn't be on our team if it weren't for the deals involving past #13s:
hayward
favors
kanter
marvin
mo
(and the Gs pick)

I am a huge Memo fan, and the more I review the numbers the bigger fan I become.

Memo struggled a bit his first season with the Jazz, reports were that he came in out of shape. They injury filled season had the jazz using 17 different starters, but Memo was the only jazz player to play in all 82 games. Suprisingly he only made 17 3pt shots that season, compare that to the magical playoff run of 06-07 where he made 25 3pt shots in just 17 games.

In 2008 against the Lakers in a pivotol game 5 Memo had 13 rebounds and 13 points playing against the Pau Gasol. Pau was +13 for the game, the Lakers won by 7 and eventually won the series.

This guy was drafted 13th in the 1985 draft. I love the tie.

we also drafted danny schayes 13th overall. he had a PER of 13.2 that first season and averaged a total of 13.1 points + rebounds. the next year he played in 50 jazz games before we traded him for rich kelley, a 7-foot center/forward from the nuggets. kelley had a 13.2 PER for the rest of that season, but fell off in his two full seasons with the jazz that followed. that's when the jazz traded him for john gianelli, jim boylan and bernard king.

gianelli, whose nickname was g-man, played 17 games and was waived by late november of that season. boylan never played in the NBA after beginning his career as a player-coach in switzerland, but has since been an NBA head coach and assistant coach.

as we've bemoaned in other threads, the king trade never worked out for utah, so they eventually traded him for wayne cooper and a 2nd round pick (ken green). traded green to denver for robert smith, who they waived less than a month later. but cooper played here for a season and averaged 7 and 6 (13) before being traded (with allan bristow) for bill robinzine. robinzine is the guy who played here for a year and then took his own life the following fall after he was out of the NBA.

so from danny schayes (#13), you have a trail of guys that includes schayes, kelley, king, cooper and robinzine, plus some other peripheral guys.

More on Memo

He played for the jazz 6.5 years (half of 13).
He is the 13th all-time Jazz games played. (474 shared with Matt Harpring)
He is the 13th line of my spreadsheet so that makes him 9th all-time Jazz rebouder ahead of Milsap, Colins and Harpring.
He is the 13th line of my spreadsheet so that makes him 9th all time in blocks (ahead of #14 stockton?)
He is not 13th all time for 3pts, that spot is held by Kyle Korver. Memo is ahead of kyle on the list, as Memo is ahead of Deron, Hornacek, and CJ Miles who never saw a 3pt attempt he didn't like.

in 2007 Memo was selected to play in the All-Star game held in the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. No hotel in Las Vegas has a 13th floor.

Assists: Jim McElroy (1112)

I'm coming up with different people coming in at #13 for rebounds and blocks.

In their 13th season (1986-87), the Jazz were 13th in attendance (total, not average) and opponent FTAs. The Jazz lost to the Hawks in their 13th game of the season. The Jazz had a 2-2 record when playing on the 13. One of those losses was on a Friday. The Jazz picked up their 13th win on December 13. The Jazz were 2-3 in games decided by exactly 13 points.

In their 13th season in Utah (1991-92), the Jazz ranked 13th in steals, blocks, and turnovers. Corey Crowder made 13 3's and had 13 turnovers. David Benoit played in 13 games in the 1992 playoffs. The Jazz lost their 13th game of the season to the Mavs. The Jazz had a 3-1 record on the 13th and a 1-0 in games decided by exactly 13 points.

Dang it no you are not, 'cause that messes up the whole 13 & Memo thing that we got goin on here.

I really hope that my spread sheet didn't get sorted badly, that could really screw up the next 12 days. Freakin' unlucky 13.

See the edit. Epic Failure.

Question, does anyone know where training camp is being held at this year?????????????

That's a good question. I haven't heard. They'd been having it at Boise for quite a while before last year. Given the normal amount of time this year it wouldn't surprise me if they head to Boise again.
