2011-2012 what changes need to happen to make the Jazz a competitive team?

Im curious what everyone is thinking and hoping for in the offseason. We all know that just 1 deacent draft pic is going to save us.

The Jazz have a couple options. Do they rely on the draft and maybe a couple of small trades hoping to build a young team? Or do they make some major trades in hopes of immediate competetivness for next years regular season?

Is it trades? Coach changes? Just wanted to hear from fanz perspectives.

if we keep AK, get a good pg, and find a guy like korver who can step up in the critical moments, or help close out the games, we will be more than competitive
but if u mean, contender as competitive,
then we should make major trades and moves in the current draft, to pick 2 guys in the first 6 place, and we can be a contender in 2-3 yrs
For me, it would happen with using jefferson and 12th pick, to move up and pick Enes kanter, and get some trashes to waive later on. And with the first pick, if we get lucky, Irving, if not Brandon knight , would make a contender

milssap,miles,watson,evans , memo on the bench, it seems pretty good

People may think why im stuck on Enes, but since he didnt play in kentucky, noone could watch him, but he is my countryman, i watched him, i can say, even in his rookie year, he will be better than Memo in his prime, i guess that makes a good explanation

I think we need to take a look long term, beyond the 2011-2012 year. From my perspective it all starts with the front office. Sloan has been the cornerstone of this franchise and that's what made this franchise "consistently successful" in the past. Jazz's front office has been the one thread that has remained constant all these years. We need to go back to that. We need another coach who will pull this team together. A coach who has the capabilities but at the same time the respect of players.

Having said that, I do not that think that Ty Corbin is that guy. I think he is the perfect guy to coach this team in the interim, but he is not the solution going forward. I think Jeff Hornacek could be that guy. He is already a Jazz legend and he wants to coach. He could study under Ty for a couple of years and eventually take over. In my opinion he has the perfect blend of experience (as a player), knowledge of the game, respect of everyone around him and a history with this franchise. He oozes what Jazz stands for which is hard-work, integrity, loyalty and respect.

Moreover, he wants to be there. He has put his hand up, gotten his feet wet and said "I'll give it a go". No disrespect to Karl, but he still enjoys doing things outside basketball. I know he had offered his help if the Jazz needed him, but it's more on a consultancy basis - not full time. Not sure where Stockton stands but I bet if Jeff is in charge, Stockton would have a hard time saying no if asked.

Players will come and go but we need a strong front office to ensure that the Jazz return to the team that it once was. Who better than someone who's been there fore us before and he's here for us again now.

Greg Miller - he's learning but he'll be there in a couple of years.
KOC - he has shown time and again that he is able to pull the rabbit out of the hat - I think he'll be OK.

We now need that coach that will pull this franchise together and I think in a couple of years, we'll have that in Jeff.

1- Durring the lock-out Ty Corbin needs to go be a head coach at the D-league or D-Paul or SLCC or in Greece, or at Heriman High School or a Bountiful Jr. Jazz team. He can learn important lessons like: If youre up by one with 1.5 seconds left and your opponent has NO timeouts---MISS THE FOUL SHOT. Or Gaurd the inbounder.

2- AL Jefferson needs to watch about 1,000 hours of Dr. Deron's magical cure all video tape. Mostly of Carlos Boozer and Memo playing the flex offense. The video should be narrated by Scott Layden: See the ball, see the ball go into the post, SEE IT COME OUT AGAIN. See the defense have to gaurd 5 players, see 5 Jazz players who look interested? See Jerry Slaon was right all along about offense.....

Follow that up with 200 hours of Karl Malone dunking and making power moves to the middle where he is fouled would also help.

3- Find a mad scientist who can take Milsaps heart and mind and put them in Fesenko's body....just make sure to explain to Greg why the jazz should sign Fesenko to a long term contract BEFORE the procedure.

4- If the jazz are going to play conservative by keeping Corbin, Al, Harris, CJ, Bell, AK etc.....they better reduce Beer prices and brink back $1 beer nights.

Jazz gotta take a hard look at themselves and not go forward with this idea that they have system and a bunch of good guys. For starters, is Ty the guy? What do you need to see in him next year to say that he is? Who do you try to get if he fails?

Shooting and the 3 ball: Sloan is gone, it is okay to shoot it and it is okay to defend it. In fact, in the modern NBA, both are necessary and both are currently very weak spots for the Jazz. Cut some non-shooters and get some guys in who can hit it. Figure out what it will take to defend it: is it the very weak middle D that causes the wings to collapse opening up the 3s? What and who is to blame there? Al? Sap?

Figure out what it is going to take and get it done. Get over this "But Ronnie Price is a great guy who trys real hard and knows the system." Get hardnosed.

You gotta love/hate Jazzfanz; the over-reaction on Coach Ty is astounding. You all have daddy complexes. Get over it. Ty is going to be here next season, so we should all be speculating about a big-man coach or a defensive specialist.

It's hard to speculate about next year until we see where the lottery balls land and get a full list of draft commitments. Things look a lot different if we get lucky and land in the top 3. I think we've gotta spend one of these picks on a PG, and the other on a 2 or a 3. I'm betting that Irving, Barnes, and Williams are going 1,2, and 3, and I think the Jazz would take any of them if they landed there. Outside of Irving, though, I don't think the Jazz should draft a PG with their highest pick. Maybe we can trade up with our 12th pick in order to get Walker or Knight?

One question I have is what we would do if the BPA at #6 or 7 is a PF or C? With the movement on the draft board lately, this scenario seems more and more likely. This means that KOC will need to work the phones for a trade involving Al or Millsap for an established wing. I think we could soak Indy on a trade, but I've blabbered on about that and nobody is as hyped on George as I am.

AK is gone. I hope.

CJ will be back whether you like it or not. So, get used to it. I'd also brace yourself for an extension.

I can see this depth chart going into next season if we don't get a top 3 pick:

Harris/Watson/Knight (with Harris getting dealt at the deadline for picks when Knight is ready for more minutes)
Hayward/George/highest pick
CJ/George/highest pick/Evans
Favors/Kanter/Evans
Al/Kanter/Memo

EDIT: what if the proposed Indy trade of Millsap for George + other involved Indy's first rounder this year, and what if we could get Faried with that pick?

The only thing I really care about is installing an actual defensive scheme, not just a vague philosophy. And for god's sake, lets stop being the team that fouls the most. My dream is we bring in an actual defensive coach a la the Thibs model, but I don't care where or how we get it.

As to the players, every guy is on the block even if KOC says otherwise. But unlike a lot of people, I think we have a good foundation. The only player hope I have is a concerted effort to get Memo back to his full self. That means I want him training with Navy Seals and getting a vasectomy so his freaking wife won't have a baby. I think Memo can help us, but more importantly he could be a pretty valuable trade chip.

I had almost forgot about Memo, 10 million expiring could net something for the Jazz. Say what you want about KOC but he has put together a bunch of tradeable contracts. Anything is possible.....

And getting a good D coach does not have to mean Ty is gone. He could be an assistant like Thib was at Boston. I just hope they can look themselves in the face and realize how bad they have been on D for years and make a change, not stick with the Jazz "system".

Wow, where is the hate coming from for Ty? Remember, this is the team that went 4-13 WITH Deron after their 27-13 start. The team has gone 5-14 since with a ton of injuries and a WEAKER team.
Face it, the roster, as is, is no better than 30 wins/per, no matter who the coach may be. You can tell Ty is coaching for the future and the FO is supporting him. He clearly has been trying to give Favors and Hayward playing time...and isn't that what we all wanted? Didn't a lot of us want to see him coach according to matchups, like he did by starting Fes and playing Millsap at SF vs. Artest?

He replaced Raja with CJ in the starting lineup. How many of us were screaming at Sloan to do something about Bell? The Jazz just don't have the players to compete. And they especially don't have the personnel when you have AK and Harris hurt. Utah is rebuilding. Favors is the first part of that; the Jazz using their two picks this off-season and GS' lottery pick next year is the next part of that, whether KOC uses those assets for three youngsters of trades one or two of those picks for veterans.

I think the defense has actually looked better. The team played pretty well against the Lakers, just couldn't hit a shot in the 2nd half.

If I were KOC, I'd look to draft a wing at #6, use the 2nd pick and/or next year's GS pick to get a veteran starter. Then sign a decent backup PG if Watson decides to go elsewhere. Fes is serviceable, but I wouldn't overpay. Pick up CJ's option, but look to trade him with the picks. He's not a consistent starter and he's turrible off the bench. Price and Elson are given a Jarron Collins goodbye. AK is offered a deal at $3M. He'll be insulted and sign with someone else. That's ok, as he's inconsistent and often injured.
