What's new

2011 draft.....

There is a lot of incentive to show up in shape and ready to go. The third pick gets something like $11 million. The question is, who is he really? The high school video is a little bit scary. He looked like a big slow kid with poor defensive fudamentals and effort. He also didn't look very explosive. I know he's a great offensive talent, but if you're the jazz, don't you have to be a little bit worried about Kanter's defense?

Yet Derrick Williams showed up with 10 percent body fat and so did Irving ( I know he was hurt but he did play in the NCAA so he has had 3 months to get into shape. In this draft you could ask who is anyone? All these guys have a lot to prove. Irving has only played 7 games in college. Derrick Williams wasn't even the most recruited player on his college team. If D. Williams can improve as much as he has why can't Kanter be improved since high school.
Knight struggle at the beginning of the year has played one year of college ball. Had a up and down tournament. He did make some tough shots in the tournament but still he has a lot to proven. Granted Kanter has no college experience but he was a top recruit and was a top international player throughout his age group. His own coach would pick him first.

Look I have no idea if Kanter is going to be a great player or a bust but in this draft is there really a sure thing. I am willing to gamble on Kanter if the Jazz feel he is the best player available.

Ok, my thoughts on this draft are starting to become clearer. The "homerun" guys in this draft are too few and too risky (this includes DWill2); if I'm KOC I'm gonna try to hit two "doubles". I want Knight AND Biyombo.

Use the asset(s) gained by trading down to get Knight (WASH or TOR) + a player (probably CJ) in order to move #12 up to around #8. I'm stubborn in my optimism that this is possible. I think these two players make us a better team next year and in the future.

I know, I know, this has been re-hashed, but you can quote me on this.

I'll admit, I got excited about Kanter watching him at the combine. But, he is probably the scariest pick in the draft because no one has seen him play 5 on 5 in a year. He could be Koufus or Al Horford.

Ugh...I can't wait until this draft happens. Then we can argue for an entire year about how we wasted a draft pick until the last 2 months when he shows some promise. Yay!

How accurate are these ceiling/basement comparisons from DX:

Kanter - "Kevin Love / Raja Araujo"
Valanciunas - "Biedrins meets Noah / Omer Asik"
Biyombo - "a 6' 9" version of Dwight Howard / Taj Gibson"

Givony still compares Kanter's ceiling to Love, which is favorable. But he gives him a much lower basement than the other two.

Valanciunas ceiling and basement are much closer than kanter's.

Biyombo's seems a little kool-aid drunk. What do you guys think? Isn't Taj offensively superior to Bismack?

So am I. The Jazz are a lot more qualified than I am to make the call. My point was just that Kantar, maybe more than anyone else, had an incentive to get in the best shape possible. Without actual games or film to judge him on it was important to make an impression with his conditioning. And it worked; because lots of people were commenting on his conditioning and how great he looked. Irving and Williams were the consensus 1 and 2. Their body fat was high, but they weren’t going through any drills and the high body fat didn’t affect their draft standing. Kantar was largely an unknown; he couldn’t afford to come to Chicago fat and out of shape. Could he be improved? Sure, but he hasn’t played much since high school so what you see might be what you get. That doesn't mean he can't get better. Lots of guys have gone from being good, but not great, players in high school to the lottery. Alec Burks for example.

Look, you’re right, there are risks with every one of these guys and I have no problem with Kanter if the Jazz think he’s the guy. I’m just a little more nervous about him now than I was before the high school tapes showed up.

I'm still drinking the Biyombo punch. Serve me up another......

Were you on the television show The Bachelor?

Well a 6'9 Dwight Howard is going to be much less effective than a (near) 7 foot Dwight Howard. Still good, but he near as dominant, so it's not that unrealistic.

Kanter's basement seems a bit unfair. I guess he is comparing how physically they are both very impressive, but maybe the ability/IQ to use it in game isn't there.

many have compared Kanter to Boozer and some others have compared him to a tougher version of Memo. maybe he's a combination of the two. I remember wishing I could smush Boozer and Memo into one player, but it's still incomplete. Neither one of them were good defenders (at least memo tried). We'd still need to squish a defensive player in there. Ugh. Oh if only I were Dr. Moreau. Frustrating.

My2Cents, Thanks for you comments. I agree that Kanter is a risk and I am nervous about this draft. If the Jazz hit a home run the future of the franchise can be greatly changed. I am not against trading down if the Jazz are not that enamored with Kanter. I would be Ok with Knight/Biyombo if we move down.
