2013-14 BYU Basketball #CougNation

I was wondering if there was a place to discuss the upcoming game on this site...

Go Cyclones!!! Nice blowout victory last year, expecting it be much closer this year. No way the Cougars are scoring 100+ in this one, however

Are you an Iowa State fan? Or a Ute fan? Cyclones were impressive against an overrated Michigan team. I think Iowa State is thin inside and if Mika can stay out of foul trouble, we'll have an advantage. We also need Haws on the court. It should be a great game.

I'm an Iowa State fan. Yes BYU has taller players inside, but unless Mika can efficiently score on the block I don't think there is an advantage. He'll also have to defend a player who can put the ball on the floor and take it to the basket, so staying out of foul trouble may be tough for an inexperienced player. Mika will likely be matched up against Georges Niang who is a very weak defender, and Mika will probably out-rebound him individually. But I'm guessing Iowa State will easily dominate the boards at every other position. This Iowa State team is not as skilled at last year's and has far less sharpshooters, but is way more athletic and has the potential to defend 1-4 dominantly. I'm curious as to who will/might be guarding the ISU point guard Deandre Kane, he will be tough to stop for BYU imo.

A big difference from last year's BYU team is Kyle Collinsworth and Mika (freshmen big man). BYU has upgraded their toughness and athletic ability with those two. Also Carlino and Haws look to have gain strength with age. I will be very suprised if BYU doesn't hold it own on the boards.

Mika has a basic post game but uses his size and strength to get really close to the hoop.

Ah, well then BYU will fare much better this year. Davies played very soft, and I just assumed BYU had more soft bigs. I seriously doubt the point guard and wings are as strong and athletic as ISU's. I'm sure BYU overmatches them in skill, however. Mika will probably cause some problems as an athletic big guy.

Anyhow, Fred Hoiberg is a genius, and as a BYU fan I'd expect to see a lot of Deandre Kane posting up guards on the block, Ejim and Niang on the perimeter isolated against bigs or elbow/block against smaller guys, and Dustin Hogue on the block against smaller players.

Let's get down to the finer points of Iowa State. Explain the Iowa State bird mascot to me. Your rival is Iowa, right? Which are the Hawkeyes, and you guys are are the Cyclones but you share the same mascot? Was it intended to piss them off?

'Cy' is the name of that lovely cardinal (the colors are cardinal and gold). He is no longer part of the logo. The old logo was him stirring up a a cyclone. The University of Iowa is the in-state rival, but is known better as EIU (Eastern Iowa University) to Cyclone fans. Iowa Hawkeye fans are unbearable. Most of their fans have not attended the university and specialize at being white trash and serving french fries. Iowa State's football team is dreadful, but they have the equivalent of Christ incarnate as a basketball coach.

Actually, strike that. Fred Hoiberg > Christ incarnate

Question-- how do Cyclone fans feel about Royce White?

Thought this was funny since we just talking about it. From Provo's Daily Herald today, notice Iowa State's logo:

About the rebounding. Mike actually does not rebound that well, the leading post rebounder is Austin, who actually doesn't have much of a offensive post game.
The leading rebounder per game is actually Haws who plays the 2 at 10.5 per. Collinsworth pulls down 8.3 and he plays the 3. Carlino pulls down 5.5 at the 1.

Iowa State's top 3 rebounders are 6-6, 6-6, and 6-4. BYU's top 3 are 6-11, 6-6, and 6-5.

I don't think rebounding will be so easy for either team. Rebounding could be the difference in the game for 2 reasons, lead to more shot attempts, and could get some people into foul trouble.

This should be a very good game.

BYU is a 6 point favorite I believe. Seems about right for a game in Provo. I take it Haws must be playing.

Iowa St. is pretty undersized, but they are really good at rebounding. Ejim (one of the 6-6 guys) led the Big 12 in rebounding last year. If Iowa State is to win, it will probably be because of offensive rebounds.

Like you said, it should be an excellent game, and a difficult first road game for the Cyclones. Many Cyclone fans are expecting a loss.

Austin has actually played pretty good......I might have to take back my, "he plays like a woman in the post sometimes." comment here soon. If he just keeps boarding like he has been, plays solid defense like he has been, and knocks down an outside jumper every once in awhile, I could live with that. He got schooled every time that Powell dude from Stanford faced him up, but not many post guys have the ability to drag him that far out and then put on the floor so not too worried about that. Pleasant surprise so far.
