What's new

2014 College Football

Lol bad time to misspeak there. Anyway, qsh summed up my feelings in his post. The goal should be to pick the four best teams, regardless of whether or not they won a conference championship game. I think the committee operated under the same idea, since that is what they are supposed to do. I guess, I'm just surprised at how many people think otherwise, and also of those that think winning a conference championship game should be required of all participants. That's all.
Fwiw I don't think winning a conference championship should be required.
I also don't think it IS required.

I do believe that conference championship games are a very big determining factor in the decision the committee makes

Can someone help me out here too? I'm 39 years old and could swear I remember K State losing to Texas A&M in the Big 12 Championship game when the latter had Dat Nguyen. Had K State won, they would've been in the National Title game. At least that's how I remember it from about 18 or so years ago. But there is no Big 12 title game so???

The Big 12 had a championship game when they still had 12 teams. Once they went down to 10, no more title game.

And Lazy D, I wanna try this one more time: nobody that I can see in here is saying you HAVE to win a conference title game to be considered one of the top 4. It just so happens that when a team gets that 13th game against another team that more times than not will also be highly ranked, it really helps add to the resume of being top 4 worthy.

Had TCU beaten Baylor and finished undefeated, odds are that they would have been chosen for the playoffs. However, they lost and while they were stuck playing a bad Iowa State team, the committee got to further evaluate the other teams against the top competition in their respective conferences. The committee feels like they did just what you're talking about: put the 4 best in. It just so happens, those conferences title games helped shape their opinion.

If Baylor beats K State 59-0 are they in the title game?
Probably not.

If tcu was playing k state and win 59-0 then I think they get in (cause they were ranked #3 going into the game instead of #6)

Agreed.
Still it was a VERY successful season and at least the bowl is close, in a warm city, with lots of attractions and things to do.
And like ugli said, the bball team well be there at the same time so ute fans get a two for one.
It could be alot worse. (The last two years for example.)

If I were a ute fan I would definitely go to the game and be very excited about it.

It's a lose lose situation though.

You beat CSU? Nobody cares. They're a MWC team.
You lose to them? Everyone cares. They're a MWC team.

And just as you did a few years back, they're going to play their hearts out to try to make a statement that they can compete with the big boys. And, as we found out, often the big boy from the PAC doesn't show up uber excited to play in Vegas against a MWC opponent.

I think Utah would have been better off losing another pac game and sliding into the spot that Wash currently has. They get to play Ok St.

Maybe for the team (though I think a win is still good. It's still a bowl game win against a team with a good record and will move them up the rankings a little)

For the fans though it's a short, in a fun place, with warmer weather, and they can watch the bball team while they are there.

Pretty good time for the fans

That's really the only silver lining for Utah. Win the game and they will most likely finish in the top 20 of the final playoff rankings. It's a great springboard heading into next year and I'm sure that's not lost on Whitt. I think the complaining is isolated to the fans. I could be wrong, but I don't see a scenario in which Utah looks like they don't want to be there.

Should they win and finish in the top 20, it will be interesting to see if they can parlay that into some recruiting success.

The Fort Worth Star Telegram mentions that Louisville and BYU were the 2 teams being considered for expansion before the Big 12 ulitimately decided to hold off. What is more interesting is the fact that they mention Florida State and Clemson showed interest in at least talking about a Big 12 move during that time and again, the Big 12 said "no thanks".

Now that they are in panic mode, will they call FSU and Clemson and beg them to engage in talks? It seems far fetched at first, but in a world in which Missou and A&M will bolt one power conference for another, there's recent precident to show that at the very least, it can happen.

Who knows how much validity there is to that speculation, but it doesn't sound like great news if you're a BYU fan. Utah got in to the PAC because Texas decided not to make the switch and the conference needed a team to add with Colorado. If BYU get's in, I expect the situation to be similar. You're going to need a few people to tell the Big 12 "no". BTW, there's no shame in that. It doesn't matter how/why you got invited to the party, as long as you're there.

Most of the players that they have made offers to but have yet to commit are in SoCal/Utah. I imagine at least a few of them will make it to Vegas. That's my silver lining.

The good news is, it should be an entertaining game and of course its in Vegas. So it's nearby and the bball team plays on that day too. The problem is, what does Utah gain by winning against a MWC opponent? All well

not much to gain and I doubt there will be a big audience outside of utes and rams fans but any bowl game is better than none and I do expect to win and hopefully add to a impressive pac-12 showing the bowl games this year.
