There is no question that today's players are stronger and faster. I'm not only talking about the effect of improved technology and sport science. I'm also not talking about the effect of vastly increased incentive and popular interest (and thus larger pool of candidates). I am talking about the difference in the nature of the game. Back in the day, the best players had the best stamina and work rate. They also generally possessed much better fundamentals, with very few projects (athletes who don't really know how to play the game). Most key players were expected to play the entire match, running back and forth the whole time with fewer timeouts (before 1950, no time outs at all). Nonetheless, the vast majority of players were inferior athletes to current players. Some, like Wilt, would see dominate in today's game (specially given modern training). Others, like a certain legendary point guard who is yet to be picked, would barely see the floor.

Yeah. He was bad early in his career, but he eventually became a pretty good shooter. Certainly nowhere close to elite though.
