It is clear (IMO) that the Jazz won't be in the 2017 lottery naturally...they're going to make the playoffs.

This could very well be the best draft class in quite some time, so what would it take for the Jazz to move up into the lottery?

The Jazz have 4 picks (2 first round, 2 second round) in this upcoming draft. What combination of picks/players would it take to move up into the lottery and what player does this team need?

Favors and the Jazz pick (somewhere in the early 20's) might be able to get ya into the lottery, maybe Favors, Burks and the pick plus taking an expiring gets ya into the top-10.

I don't think this is the course of action they'll take. The asking price will be too steep, they've already positioned themselves with great value in this draft. The issue now is more of not letting the talent slip thru their hands, as opposed to going to try and grab the sure thing - e.g. Trey Burke

The crop this year is robust with talent and I'm rather confident the player Utah selects with their pick in the 20's is a player they'll say has lottery talent.

Obviously the field is far from set but it does seem the draft will be more than deep enough to get a good player with the Warriors pick too - it's sure to be loaded with sleepers/hidden gems/overlooked talent.
 
Yea I agree.

Just thought the Jazz were in a interesting spot with a ton of picks and a couple guys who are (IMO) expendable...

Who or what did you want to trade up for? or is it simply to swap in new blood with the players you find to be expendable?
 
Its a deep draft. I would be happy getting our two first round picks and calling it good. They will help fill out the roster with cheap contracts. We would have to trade too much to get into the lottery. That is also a huge risk since lottery picks are more likely to bust than be good. That player also would not fit the time frame with the rest of the team well. If we could get there without trading any players then sure, but that is not happening. Also Jazz would have to really want a specific player that was a late lottery pick to even try and move up for.

Unless there is a player they really want then I guess we could package the two firsts with other draft picks and move up. Despite people giving up on Favors he is a really good player and it is extremely unlikely we will fill his shoes with someone from the draft. Unless we find out his injury is a bigger deal (in which case he is worthless in a trade) then we should keep him. He is one of the best 2 way PFs in the league. Burks could be traded but I doubt he is worth anything unless he gets healthy and has a great season and stays healthy. If that happens why would we trade him? He would be a great value and help. The only reason I see us trading Burks is if we need the money to resign one of our more important players.

This. The only clear superstar seems to be Fultz. There will be a couple others but could come anywhere 2-40 imo. Not worth giving up a core piece. Thomas Bryant is currently mocked at 20 and would be fine taking him that's great value at 20. You're talking about someone with a 7'6" wingspan and 9'4" reach with a developing 3 point shot and near 80% FT shooter. That's a nice piece of clay for Quin to work with. Not in any other draft are you gonna find that at 20.
 
I usually don't follow draft info too closely until March Madness but according to a couple sources I've read Jazz have 6 picks.

There own first and second

GSW's first and second
The Knicks second
The Piston second.
 
Not to kill the mood, but doesn't it seem like every year is "the best/deepest draft in years". I would be more inclined to follow and research the draft it the talking heads didn't suggest that every year's draft is amazing.

I disagree that we need money to resign players. And, it's obvious that resigning players has no impact on the cap beyond the year they are resigned.

This draft wont produce the Towns and Porzingis dominant 2way-type of bigs like we saw in 2015 next years superior in that aspect. The guards and wings are a LOADED crop this year though. the top-10 is truly star-studded.

I follow college closely and it's apparent that the 6'9" -6'11" PF/C types are seriously outperforming expectations early on, which should manifest itself in a log jam of bigs around the end of the 1st/start of the 2nd aka right in the range of the Jazz 2 1sts..

I dont think its a problem we need to deal with now. I meant if in the future a player needs a big contract that pushes us into luxury tax or we need to fill a position with an outside player that will be the only time Jazz look at trading Burks since his value is very low. I only see him as a salary dump or if he breaks out and he is useful then he is a good contract we keep.

I just don't think we are going to resign any of our current players.
