Just googled it. So basically we pissed away Malone so we could trade for Gail Goodrich. So sad. Wow!!
We didn’t trade for Goodrich. We signed him and weeks later the league stepped in and made us give up compensation for him.

The jazz at the time probably thought they were doing something clever. Lmao
WTF?? Why?We didn’t trade for Goodrich. We signed him and weeks later the league stepped in and made us give up compensation for him.
WTF?? Why?
"Going in, the Jazz did not know they were going to have to give up all those draft choices for me," said Goodrich. "They made a deal with a free agent that they thought would help their team. But the league, in an effort to discourage free agency - I'm not sure they'll admit to this even now - stepped in and awarded the Lakers those draft choices as compensation.
"It was a big settlement that New Orleans eventually had to agree to. But not until there had been a lot of behind-the-scenes pressure from the league.
"The truth is, there was no trade at all as far as myself and the Jazz were concerned. The Jazz signed me, and then the league demanded compensation to the Lakers."
Yep. The first blatant instance of favoring the Lakers, i.e. the big markets. Kind of doubt they would have done this with any other team. There was supposedly precedence set a few years before, but the details of that case were more that it was a trade rather than "compensation", but that is the flimsy **** the league leaned on to make this happen. And it was widely suspected at the time that the Jazz would end up with a very high pick, so this was really a known quantity. Imagine we sign, idk pick someone, Lavine or something, and we get a top 3 pick then the league steps in and forces us to give the pick to the Bulls as compensation for signing him. Seriously ****ed up ****. Wild west days of the league to be sure. How different would we have been if we got Magic, then added Malone a few years later or something. Wow.It’s actually really pretty ****ing crazy. Read this:
Geez this is wild. Lol. I learn something new every year doing these. This is by far the most depressing thing I’ve ever learned. All these years I thought it was Wilkins and Magic. Now we can add Moses to that list of legends the jazz missed out on. LmaoYep. The first blatant instance of favoring the Lakers, i.e. the big markets.
