2024 NBA Draft Mega Thread

Not slobbering for the guy but let’s say he’s roughly as effective as Maxey in the pros. We giving DA a pass for not taking him at 8 to select Cody Williams if Cody turns out to be Tony Snell?

We can’t just go get Brunson or FVV. Mann and Hyland suck. I get what you are trying to say here… small guards are somewhat abundant. So are wings with a good frame that aren’t good at basketball. So while I’d rather take Castle or a guy with that kind of build that I think can play… the FO has to determine they in fact can play. Rob has demonstrated he can be an offensive force. It may not all translate but we can’t take him and Reed off our board because of physical stature. The kings took Tyrese Evans over Steph Curry because Tyrese overwhelmed him in a one on one workout. You don’t want to overlook tremendous talent based on one factor. That’s all.
You cant maximize one hypothetical and minimize the other by making one Maxey and the other Snell. KOC says Dilly comps to Bones Hyland & Lou Williams, and Cody is Jalen Rose. However much you hate or like KOCs comps, but that isnt anywhere close to Maxey vs Snell. Personally, give me Jalen Rose all day since we dont have a guy like him on the roster and we have plenty of slashing small guards.

But my main point was that you gotta worry about how you develop the guys you draft. Getting minutes is a start (which Dilly would struggle with vs Sexton and Key), but having pieces around you that enable to you play the right way during those minutes is even more important. Stacking a bunch of small guards who have no synergy amongs them on either end is not gonna end well. They will get slaughtered on defense and all they learn to do offensively is likely gonna be stuff like slashing and shooting off the dribble.

Yeah then the Kings drafted Jimmer over Kawhi, Burks, and Thompson because they thought he was super skilled. Should have gone size there. You can do these cherry picked examples for both sides of the size vs skill argument

No he won't. He has the game to contribute immediately.
You really think that? You've seen how hard it is for these COVID kids from the last class, which was more talented ,to come in right away and compete. He is in no ****ing way a contributor to winning on Day 1.

That's kind of HH's schtick when it comes to the draft

I'm saying you gotta find out which is which. KOC comps are wild. I put almost zero stock in them personally. If the evaluation starts and ends with size you will miss opportunities. All I am saying here. If we had Donovan and passed on Maxey solely because of size well that would be a mistake.

lol I don't have a schtick. All I am saying is you gotta find out which is which lol. Continue on with whatever it is you think I am saying. The point was not the actual example... its finding out who can play. At #8 if our choices are Reed, Rob or Cody the deciding factor shouldn't be physical profile. It should be who you think is the best player. If you view them as equal or close enough to equal then let size dictate where you go. Rob is far from an ideal fit but if you look at his per minute production in volume and efficiency I think you have a valid case that he is an outlier small guard that can play. Reed too. If the draft was today I still take Castle over them but I would understand going the other way.

Yeah I think that. Some of you are so obsessed with how he played after being injured that you just completely ignore how solid he was pre injury. He has the perfect role player game right now and will get consistent minutes early.

And you are completely ignoring historical context that rookies dont contribute to winning, especially ones that are kind of mediocre as players currently. That's not a statement on his future potential, but you are being delusional (per usual) about how fast rookies can contribute.

But Im sure when it doesnt happen you will blame whoever the coach is.

I get that. I'm not nearly as invested in the draft as you all are so I dont know what comps are good and what arent. But as our top 3 most talented offensive players right now are probably Lauri, Sexton and Keyonte.... two of which are small guards who are bad defensively... I would rather not stack more of those guys.

Only situations where I would pick Dilly are:
1) He is CLEARLY the BPA when its our turn to pick
2) He falls and we trade up with our latter picks to get him on great value
3) We are pretty much 100% sure his ceiling is higher than that of Keyonte AND Sexton

Other than that.. draft a center, 3&D wing, frontcourt ballhandler, or a bigger guard/wing... literally anything else and we likely got a job opening for that guy as well as some complementary pieces.

I think we are going around in a circle because I don't think anyone is suggesting that we draft Dilly if we don't think he is the clear best player available when we pick. If we view Dilly in the same group as some of these bigger wings then you definitely go with big wing over pg.

We are on the same page then. I'm just not really married to anything or anyone on this roster. Lauri obviously is deserving of being a foundational piece but if you don't have other obvious pieces then competing in the West in the near term is a tough proposition... so that makes him someone that could be moved depending on the direction we head.

I'm not clamoring for Dilly or Reed and honestly we should probably investigate a trade of some sort if one of them are the bpa at 8 (either trade up or move Sexton or Key or something) to simplify the choice a bit. I also wouldn't be above taking one of them and figuring it out if I didn't love the other options on the board.

Also my draft schtick is not taking weird cherry picked examples. My schtick is really bankable basketball stuff I think can make a player work. I also don't like multiple red flags. And all of this is dependent on where you are drafting the player. End of the first with multiple red flags... go ahead and draft that guy. No bankable skills at the end of the first but an upside case... go on ahead.
