2024 NBA Draft Mega Thread

I mean, he's using different numbers he has access to in order to evaluate whether a prospect can shoot, is athletic or can handle the ball in pick-and-roll. There are different ways to quantify or talk about whether a player has those dimensions to their game. You don't need an exhaustive analysis to say that guys like Buzelis, Holland and Castle didn't shoot well this year and that it's a concern they'll need to overcome. Saying that Dalton Knecht is old for the draft isn't some incredible insight.

One of my main issues is that I have to believe there is a huge difference in what you can take away from the many leagues these guys play in. Also, I think he only has 4 or 5 years of data, which isn't really enough, and so I thought he was going to go back further, which would be more convincing to me.

On the other hand some of it does seem to make sense. I think it's at least worth thinking about as you evaluate guys.

Yeah, Locke's data samples are small enough that you'd almost have to call them anectdotal. Some guys improve and some don't.
The story on Isaac Okoro was that he could be an athletic, two-way impact player if he learns to shoot.
The story on Dyson Daniels was that he could be a 6'6", athletic, two-way guard or lead guard if he learns to shoot.
The story on Anthony Black was that he could also be an athletic, two-way, lead guard, if he makes enough shots to make defenders guard him.
The story on Justise Winslow was that he could be an athletic, two-way wing with some playmaking if he learns to shoot better.

The only take-away is that every year there are several guys for whom you'd say, "If this guy can just shoot..." Among those guys, there are a few who make the necessary improvements, like Jaylen Brown, and a whole bunch that don't. When you see a guy like Castle, who is actively turning down open shots, and then you see that his numbers likewise show a lack of confidence, it should be a red flag, imo.

It's not about how many followers he has. It's about whether the front office wants him putting out messaging that contradicts what the front office is doing. He's still considered an "official voice" of the Jazz and he gives regular interviews with Jazz-affiliated media. He's less likely to promote his own personal opinions than a journalist. His job is really to support the Jazz organization.

Every year, Locke basically tries to manage people's expectations and talk about draft prospects that conservatively should be available to the Jazz in the draft. This year, he's saying he likes Cody Williams, Ron Holland and Jared McCain. At least two of those guys should be available at #10. One year, Locke was over the moon for Trey Lyles, and sure enough Lyles was the pick that year.
Just agree to disagree then.

I know he likes to say that he’s the “official voice of the Utah Jazz”, like he shouts that from the rooftop as if it’s his birth right as if it puts him on a mantle or something.

At the end of the day he’s more or less just a Craig Bolerjack right?

Like another poster had said, maybe he was something more for the previous regime, I don’t think he’s much of anything now for the Ryan Smith / Danny Ainge combo.

But this works the same way when you miss out on a “good fit” player too. A good example is Jaquez on Miami and Podziemski on Golden State. Those guys would have been fantastic on the Jazz and they fell to the 2nd half of the draft. Those are both good fit guys for the Jazz at 10 and 15 and in hindsight would be top 10 picks in a redraft. The Jazz thought BPA was Udoka and it turned out Desmond Bane and Jaden McDaniels (who would have been perfect good fit guys) were passed up.
Do you want good fit guys or stars?
