8 is the magic number: Paul Millsap at SF

I posted this in a thread earlier this morning, and I've been saying it for a while, but it deserves its own thread at this point because I could have posted it in a number of threads.

If I were the coaching and training staff looking down the barrel of this schedule and figuring out how to distribute minutes in the front court, my magic number would be 28 min/game +/-. That has traditionally been a good number for Millsap; given last season's foul rate, I wouldn't expect to get more from Favors on a nightly basis; etc.

If 28 min/game was the average for AJ, DF, and PM, then Millsap would only need to play SF 8 minutes a game for there to be 20 minutes to split between Memo and Kanter or dole out more to a player on-fire. I officially endorse giving every one of those to Kanter as long as he isn't sucking it up beyond expectations; I don't think he will.

8 min, y'all.

I like the idea of giving PM some time at both positions in each game when the matchups allow it.

I also like the idea of giving each rotation player about 20 minutes minimum per game (rookies, ~10 minutes; sophomores, ~15 minutes) and then earn the extra 5 or 10 or 15 minutes.

Such an in-game strategy is especially valuable for a high-frequency game schedule with lots of back-to-(back-to-)backs as this truncated season has.

I agree with these fundamentals.

Everybody should earn that extra time based on their defensive performance.

As for Al, I'd specifically target his boxing out, rotation, and, on offense, his willingness to pass. If he continues to struggle in the last category, I'd give him more minutes in the second unit, where his style of offensive domination would be better maximized.

As of now I feel that Okur is the odd man out. He is a washed up veteran and will probably get 10-15 mins per game.

Favors: 30 mpg
Jefferson: 35 mpg
Millsap: 35 mpg (10 at SF)
Kanter: 10 mpg
Okur: 10 mpg

Give or take a few minutes to add up to 48 at each position, I think this rotation is a safe bet until an injury/trade occurs

Those numbers might be a bit high this year given the consolidated schedule. I think the starters should be cut by 5 min a game to preserve them for the season, and it will give our young players more minutes.

Actually I kind of like the balance, it is reasonable with the back to backs that the team will have.

Of Course it will not always work this way, there will be injuries and if a player is hot, he'll get extra time, but if the Jazz average this it sounds fine to me.

I'd agree with you if there was at least one other player on the team with something resembling a consistent jump shot.

What a dumb thread. This isn't 2k. You don't just program a certain amount of minutes. Every game and every situation is different

You never watched Sloan coach, did you?

Maybe Corbin will be more flexible.
