My take is that Cotton makes the roster because Quin likes him.
There is that. I don't think they want to let him go. I don't believe that's the case. And I don't think he'll play himself off the team in camp.

It's good to see you talking yourself off the ledge. I loved your demeanor when you joined this site. Unlike many fans who follow their chosen player to the team, you seemed to have a clear perspective that this is not about your guy. Cotton can succeed here if he figures out how to integrate his talents into the whole, not if he is determined to stand out by doing his own thing. He strikes me as a guy who has a ton of talent, a good head and a lot of heart, but he also has some stuff to overcome (especially size). I think he's in a great environment to prove whether he can do that, and I hope he succeeds. I haven't heard a single word come from management that leads me to believe they think otherwise. Who cares what idiotic ideas (or even what great ideas) that writers or fans discuss. Until the front office acts (or at the very least, gets discovered to be pursuing something) it is pointless to react. There is that. I don't think they want to let him go. The bottom line is that if Cotton performs well I guarantee he'll be embraced. The small sample size we've seen so far is not nearly enough to set minds at ease because we've seen many flashes in the pan, but if he backs up his end-of-year performance with equally solid work this season he's going to have a job for a long time to come.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Red is back!Exactly, Joe. When I joined the site, I knew the obvious. It's Jazzfanz, not Cottonfanz. On top of recognizing one should stay realistic and always be a team player, it did not take long to see this was exactly what I would have hoped for, in terms of "if there were one team....". That video I saw early on, the one where they documented a road trip, really made me sit up and take notice of the coaching staff. I'm sure the preparation would be similar and as focused with any professional group, but I could not help be impressed with Snyder, and the whole package of what I saw there. Seeing the regulars at SL, and the stands full, only confirmed my original impression. Namely, if I want to see the guy get what he deserves, what better place then with this team and this coach? And about "what he deserves". I follow all the guys that move on to the League from here. His humbleness set him apart from guys who star in their own movie. That's exactly the kind of guy who fits in with a team that has that youthful enthusiasm and know they are part of something that could be special. So a family is always one for all and all for one. So important for the guys on a team to like each other, to be happy where they are, to be anxious to prove something. And to have a coach who knows how to develop players. Who would not want " their guy" to embrace all that? I've always thought he was lucky to land here.
In all honestly, I've never experienced the degree of emotional investment in one of our local products as I have with Cotton. And it's very clear to me that it has everything to do with how he conducts himself, and how he speaks of himself, and how he never puffs himself up, or takes anything for granted. Certainly, you could never expect a player to be hungrier or more determined to have the attitude "failure is simply not an option". All that has seen to it that I want this kid to succeed more then any other I've supported, and whose careers I've enjoyed. From both PC and URI.
If Cotton proves to be a quality backup or better, he will not be cut. He might get traded for a second rounder or something, but there's no reason for the Jazz to just let him walk if he has value.I like Cotton, but I don't think he is going to be on the team at the end of the year.
I don't know the specifics of his contract, but I know if he makes the 15-man roster, then there is another date (maybe in December or January) that marks his contract being full guaranteed. Now this is where I'm uncertain, but I think his contract becomes guaranteed this year, that means he will be guaranteed for all of 2016-2017 with a team option for 2017-2018.
That means if Cotton becomes full guaranteed, we will have 4 PG's under contract for 2016-2017, which I wouldn't think would desirable for Utah. So either we trade Burke or Cotton gets cut before he becomes full guaranteed. That seems like a definite reality.

It's a sound model, but the component you're missing is that they are also picking these guys up hoping to find a diamond in the rough. It has happened before. When it happens again they are unlikely to just throw their find on the trash heap.Maybe, but how many of the Jazz's non-guaranteed contracts have made it past the guarantee date?
I think it's part of the Jazz's model to keep about 2-3 non-guaranteed contracts and just cut them before they become guaranteed. Instead of paying 1-2 million for your end of bench guys, you are paying 90K.
I swear Ben Dowsett has pictures of Zach Lowe he pleasures himself too, but the dumb dude doesn't even know where Rodney Hood went to school before Duke.
Whichever school that was, I'm confident it's a place that Rodney is happy that he left.To be fair, I don't think that even Rodney Hood remembers where he went to school before he went to Duke. . .
