A Stark Realization

We don't need a go-to-guy. Because we already have one in Al. Denver had one in Melo, LAL had one in Kobe until Shaq/Pau arrived. Didn't work very well for them. All championship caliber teams have 1-2 punch because you need to least two players to run some sort of an offense. Playing iso in final minutes is not a winning basketball. Dallas won championship beating "iso-like" loaded OKC and Heat by playing team ball.

We had a go-to-guy in Deron and the ceiling of that team was evident to everyone on this board. And you prey for a go-to-guy again?

Hayward can be a number 1 option. So can Burks. The former is far closer to being ready for such a role though. But Burks can be #1 option for the second unit next year.
I don't think Hayward can be option #1. What is his go-to move?...drive to the basket somewhat out of control & flailing his arms to draw a foul? He's not a good shooter on the move (like Randy Foye) and can't create his own shot. If Burks can develop his outside shot, he has the abilty to effectively go one on one on anyone, like Dwill. Hayward is a good player, just not a guy you want taking the last shot of the game...that's all.

He's had some pretty impressive late-game play the past few seasons

Kanter to me looks like he has the best potential of The Four. Favors looks lik he has the least. I really think Burks and Hayward will work nicely and compliment each other well.

I agree... Still think favors anchors our defense but that starting next year Kanter will pass him offensively for good!!

And I love the way burks and Hayward playoff each other!!

I agree that the Jazz need a system that creates multiple threats like we used to have during the Stockton/Malone days. I do think Favors can be effective if he's set up well and moving to the basket. He can finish or get fouled at a high rate. The issue is that we don't have the spacing or guard play to make this happen usually.

It's also tremendously helpful to have guards and wings who can put the ball on the floor and take their defender off the dribble. This puts pressure on the defense. Most of our guys apparently can't do that. Hayward can do it occasionally, and Burks probably could more than he's allowed to.

The reality is that our guard play with Tinsely, Foye and Watson has been so unequivocally bad, that we really have no choice but to dump the ball to Al, or give the ball to Hayward and hope for the best. What we really need is an SF who can reliably stretch the floor, and a multi-dimensional PG who can run plays with expert timing.

Hayward isn't a #1 option, at least not yet. I think that will be a combination of the core 4 but mostly being on Kanter's Shoulders.

Glad I'm the only one that doesn't think Favors has a much higher ceiling than where he already is. Kanter could be a very good offensive player, and if Haywar can keep shooting like this he can become close to a #1 guy. Burks can still go either way IMO.

I am seeing the opposite there. I am seeing Favors with several different moves but he is not quite finishing on some of them. He is trying to do different things from different positions, and can start from further out. Like I said he often does not make the shot, but ususally has a good look. Kanter on the other hand seems to work mostly out of the low post, altough I do like his midrange jumper, which Favors is showing signs of. Kanter just so often seems to get completely thwarted/blocked/stripped/3 seconds because of a lack of athleticism. I possible superstar in Favors, likely roll player in Kanter.

I agree. Both Burks and Hayward have the ability to drive and dish, pull up for a jumper or draw a foul.

In case this wasn't clear, I meant the best potential as a #1 scorer. I was talking about offense specifically.

RIGHT NOW, Kanter can destroy players not as tall or strong as him one on one and can hit an open jumper from 20 feet. Consistently. Whether he can beat a triple team or score driving is another thing, but we know what he can do. What can Favors do consistently? Sometimes he looks offensively competent, but just as often, he doesn't look like he knows what he should do exactly. I think a PnR guard would do wonders for him, but needing someone to set the table for you on every play is not a #1 guy to me.

Too much Burks, Hayward, Kanter in this thread.

Our core is BigAl, Watson and Marvin Williams doncha know?
