A tiny bit of inside info

I don't have any ties to the Jazz so I rarely, like never, get any good stuff about the team. Only time I do is as it relates to a UK player (and conversations they may have had with the Jazz) and several friends that are NBA scouts (but for other teams) that may have a peripheral impact/involvement with the Org.

Anyway, my best source is an Eastern Conference scout... same guy that whispered Exum's name to me before he was ever mentioned publicly. I spoke with him less than an hour ago and he said that the Jazz seem to be aggressively trying to bulk up their scouting muscle. He said many top guys appear to being courted. He said, "it seems the Jazz are trying to become the best scouting franchise in the NBA."

That's the tiny bit of info.. and now I'm speculating.

- Is it because they see the international field getting better and better and want a leg up?
- Is it because they simply want to spread their focus and depth of scouting over more genre? (i.e. d-league, international, upcoming FA's, cbb, etc)
- Is it because maybe they are banking that things change and kids can jump right of HS?

I think it's MAYBE all of those, but mostly because they are taking the "build through the draft" very seriously. With 15 draft picks, as of now, over the next 4 years, Favors under a very favorable deal, some attractive rookie contracts in Burks, Exum, Gobert, Hood, and Burke...

We go into '16/'17 with only $36,000,000 on the books with Hayward, Favors, Exum, Burke, Gobert, and Hood.
We'll also have (assuming no additional trades) two more 1st rounders and three or four 2nd rounders.

We'll have lots of decisions to make regarding some existing players.. Burks, Kanter, etc.. but it appears, to me, that the Jazz are plotting a scheme to amass tons of picks (duh), beef up scouting (so it seems to be happening), and have a nucleus to build around of;

Exum - Burke - Hayward - Gobert - Favors - Hood

If we are able to add two really good players out of all of these draft picks, we're looking pretty solid, and we'll still have around $20MM in cap space (a bit of projecting salary cap and other future uncertainties) to fill whatever holes are apparent at that time.. with a stud or two.

I know I'm reaching.. a lot. But this little tidbit got me hyped.

Doesn't surprise me... I would hope the Jazz are looking at picking and stashing good talent with the number of picks they now have.

^^
Good info. And I'd agree with all your points re: why the Jazz are trying to bulk up their scouting. Don't also discount that the D-League is heading towards a true minor league system and this will be the first time in many seasons the Jazz have had a 1-to-1 affiliation with a D-League franchise.

But you spelled Alec's name wrong (it Burks not Burke). ;)

JK, I just don't see Utah going with two lead guards. I predict Burke will be dealt just as the Jazz did with Green to make way for Stockton. But you never know. Maybe Trey learns to shoot and Exum becomes a Kobe-like player at the 2.

Haha.. I addressed that in my OP. Burke will still be on rookie contract in 16/17 whereas Burks would have had to be re-signed/extended

I know. I was just expressing my opinion that Alec, not Trey will be a building block. In truth, both - or neither - might be. I absolutely LOVE what I saw from Hood. If he can learn to defend, Rodney looks like a natural starter to me. Just as the development of Gobert might mean Kanter is on the trading block with Favors moving over to PF. Could even see Derrick - if he doesn't develop an offensive game - moved at the end of his contract.

Jazz are extremely flexible moving forward. Just pick the best 6-7 to keep, depending on performance and price.

Exum - Burke - Hayward - Gobert - Favors - Hood

Good post and thanks for the info.

Curious though why burke, hood, gobert, and to a lesser extent exum are supossedly part of the core.

Is it just simply because they have more years on thier rookie deals? (Doesnt seem like a good reason imo)

Burks and kanter have just as much of a chance to be a part of the future core as those players mentioned (except maybe exum) imo.

Burks and kanter might be extended this summer, or have good years and signed to big deals, or have poor years and be signed for cheap.
Burke might not improve his current poor play and the jazz let him go or trade him.
Gobert might not develop enough offensive game.
Hood might be a typical late first round pick and be out of the league in a few years.

I think its obvious that the jazz are hoping that favors and hayward are future pieces of the team. And probably exum since we tanked for him and got him as a top 5 pick in a heralded draft.

But to count burke, gobert, and hood as core pieces of the future, while counting burks and kanter out seems kinda premature and very very speculative

I am not projecting or predicting.. but rather just taking existing contracts.. of course it won't play out that way.

Any info on this Kanter injury?

I texted him but the dood is dissin me.

I see

This is cool if true. Always thought teams, especially small market teams, could get a ton of value out of developing world class non-player assets, such as training, development, medical, and of course scouting. We just paid Trevor booker $5 M and he's an average NBA player... What would $5M buy us in player development coaches and scouts.

Remember Mark Cuban talking about this when he was asked why they had such a huge coaching staff. Mentioned he could hire a coach to work with his 1st round pick for $50,000 a year... Why wouldn't he.

Anyway hopefully some of the new money we just got in the trade can help us do some of this stuff.

What a joke..Every team tries to be like Spurs.. you call this info? Next thing is your info will be the Jazz are looking to win a championship...

Go to agree with NC. Locke has been talking about the Jazz's added emphasis on scouting for a while now. Not exactly inside info or anything, though it is cool that we are actively trying to take top scouts out of the freelance game.

I was gonna ask why your rep level was so low, you just answered my question with your arrogant post. How about you bring something better to the table rather than just bitch and complain?

This is how I picture PKM and ncjazz. PKM has the glamorous life; ncjazz is bitter because he got the short end of the ugly stick.

We don't need to stalk 20 useless draft picks. We need good medical staff like Phoenix and a training coach who will demand players start working out like a real man. No more beach vacations to P3. I want Karl Malone training regiments for our existing first round players not more more more second round throw always.

Just what I would do if I had a team. I would invest in scouting big and make it one of the top priorities. And I would do all my scouting on really really long terms, not only for half a year or a couple years at most, but from very young ages of prospects, starting from U16.

Personally I think it's a goal every organization should have. But I think it's a must for small-market teams like Utah to be aces in the drafting process since we'll forever have a hell of a time in free agency, coping with the luxury tax, etc.

Seems to fall in-line with the Dennis Lindsey/Spurs model. Their drafting success over the years is phenomenal. Tim Duncan (no-brainer, but still), Tony Parker at 28, Manu Ginobili at 57, Kawhi at 15...

You can only stalk actual players. Of course, there are some who seem to begin their stalking when players are fresh out of middle school.
