Abby Sunderland Missing

Stifle Tower

Punch Bowl Re-Filler
What a sad, sad story. Lost in rough seas, I'd imagine the chance of her being alive are less than 50-50.

This was quite a controversial topic here in So. CA. before she set out. I don't care HOW experienced this kid is. Letting your 16-yr old daughter try to sail around the world ALONE is insane. But I remember the parents insisting God would protect her, so I imagine she'll be found alive.

yikes, she's 16, and she's been dreaming of doing this since she was 13. a dream three years in the making - that is quite the commitment. and that's where her parent should be - committed - because those parents are nuts.

reminds me of that young girl about 10 or so years ago who wanted to set a record as the youngest aviator to fly a pane and she ended up in a fatal crash

I hope this girl's story isn't so tragic. but I hope the parents have to pay back every penny of the costs of the rescue.

This is exactly why no one would officially recognize the girl from Austrailia when she sailed around the world (other than a sound byte in the news for a couple of days).

The good news is they found her wandering around the Indian Ocean.

One of the more disgusting human interest stories as of late. Completely agree with Moe about the parents needing to be committed and obligated to pay back whatever it cost to set up a search party.

I don't know this girls story at all, so I'm not sure if this was her idea or all her parents. Either way, if you're vain enough to attempt to sail around the world you should have to waive international search and rescue missions on your behalf. Stories like this really piss me off. I feel awful for that girl. Judging by the parents quote about why she'd be ok in her attempt proves she was doomed before she ever left Cali.

I disagree. The parents know how prepared or not the girl was to set sail. Yes, she's less experienced in life and may not have the resiliency and poise of an adult come difficult times at sea. But if they feel the girl was totally prepared, and as stud sailors themselves they would know, and it was her only dream in life, I think I too would let her set sail. In fact, I find a lot of beauty in it.

Oh yeah, and she was found alive. She's fine.

Yeah, don't blame the girl. If you had parents like that wouldn't you be headin out, first chance ya got, by any means available? They probably rigged up a time-delay explosive to blow a hole in the side of her boat, just so they could later make more offa the book and movie rights, I figure.

She's SIXTEEN. Her parents said she's been dreaming of doing this since she was THIRTEEN. That doesn't seem just a tad over-indulgent to you?

Maybe if she was in her 20's, I'd give her dream some credence, but this is utterly ridiculous. And people complain about the spoiled youth of today...
those complainers just better not be among those who think this was a good idea, no matter how qualified and/or well-prepared she is.

by the way, she did have GPS, they knew where she was, it was just a remote and difficult area to get to, esp. in stormy seas.
GPS doesn't solve everything.

Well, Mo, it's kinda hard to know with chillinz alla time, eh? Ya try to learn em right, and at some point ya gotta let em bust out and try things for they own damn self.

Mosta my chillinz were helpin me in my bidnizz by the time they were 7 or 8. But sometimes they just don't lissin. They forget the simplest things. Rule # 1: Dont NEVVA git caught! Ya tell em, over and over, but what happens?

They all in prison now, all onna accounta they just didn't lissin.

Hopper, out of curiosity, why have you started writing this way? I used to be able to read your posts. You trying to prove a point of some kind?

Sometimes, ya can't understand some guy cause he can't write no good. Sometimes ya can't understand some guy cause ya can't read no good. Mosta the time, ya got some guy who can't read no good tryin to understand some guy who can't write no good. Then it's just a hella a mess, ya know?

Good to know. *searches for the ignore feature*

I kinda liked that guy, truth be told. He's the onliest one here who ever entertained the possibility that I could have a point. He wuz dead wrong, of course, but I still took it as a compliment, ya know?

At her age all I could think about were sports, video games, and members of the opposite sex.

Not much has changed over the years....

Even at my ripe old age I wouldn't ever think about sailing around the world. I'm just glad she's ok.
