For Pop, the loss to Utah came down to effort — specifically the lack of it by his team in the first half: "They played 48 minutes, we played 24," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "They came to play physically and aggressively for 48. Twenty-four minutes isn't going to do it."

As in the loss against Philly, the Spurs coach took no questions after the game, briefly lauding his opponent’s execution, physicality and effort before saying goodbye and leaving a roomful of reporters with a touch of deja vu.

Screw the 50 win record. If not getting there can add to Pop changing even one thing in the way we’ve played, the line-ups or anything, that’s got to be worth it. Might be well worth it, if the franchise then goes on another 20 year-winning-streak.

I don’t want to live in a world where somebody can say sitting Pau hurts our defense without any sense of irony.

"It feels like we are terrible, that we have so many things to improve," Ginobili said.

"It is a very unusual situation," Ginobili said. "I don't remember being in anything like this in 16 seasons. And the crazy thing is we are still third."

"They scored 120, so it was a domination," Ginobili said. "They were inspired. We were poor, always a little late and they got everything they wanted. They got threes, free throws, mid-range (jumpers), layups. We were behind (defensively) the whole game."

Ricky Rubio led the way for Utah (24-28) with a career-high 34 points on 11-of-14 shooting and nine assists. He pumped in 23 points in the first half – his best performance before halftime in his career – on 9 of 9 from the field. "I know he's a great guard, experienced guard, smart," the Spurs' Dejounte Murray said. "But it's the best I've seen him play."

"We were mentally tough," Snyder said.

Said the Spurs' Danny Green, "They looked fresh. They looked fresher than us."

"We knew that (it would be unchartered territory) from the jump with how our injuries have been, bodies going down," Green said. "Regardless, we can't make any excuses. We can't feel sorry for ourselves. We have to win games. Nobody else in the league is going to feel sorry for us. We have to put it together, figure it out. We had a different lineup in their tonight, so we have to find out who is hot, who's not. Figure out what is working for us. And we have to put it together for 48 minutes."

I'll second that.
