Advice needed

Seriously? Let's get together soon and I'll give you the idiots guide. The hoppers are going to be (or probably are already) popping up on the middle Provo, and even Archie can catch fish up there. We'll talk insurance so it'll be a nice write off/excuse for me. I'm 100% serious here.

I pay for my entertainment and vacations out of my pocket, and don't write them off as business expenses, like ordinary non-rich Americans.

Fair point. It'd be nice if taxes could be designed so that there would be less opportunity for people to have so much discretion regarding how things like this are handled.
I'm not looking to get anyone in trouble, and I recognize that salesmen can write off entertainment expenses, but I would like to see politicians get elected who have the public good in mind regarding issues like the tax code.

I don't think you'd like the real solution. The problem is a tax code that is not only about collecting revenue, it's about manipulating the behavior of citizens so they are encouraged to act in ways that benefit the state. That's why tax write-offs and deductions exist, to promote behavior by individuals that helps the rest of us. So, adopt a basic philosophy that recognizes individual rights as the primary goal of our governmental and stop using the government as a coercive force that uses individuals as a means to and end. The goal of the current system is to "spend human capitol" in order to achieve a greater society. So in our current system society is superior to the individual.

I've always said: Society exists to benefit individuals, individuals do not exist to benefit society.

Good post, GF. I think northeast lacks the understanding of why tax shelters/benefits exist. The main problem with taxes isn't how it's collected, it's how it's spent.
Just have smaller government, less waste, and wah-lah(sp?).

No, you are not supposed to write off vacations as business expenses.
When you do it, that means someone who doesn't cheat has to pay more.

As far as the government expenditures side of the equation, when you start arguing for some spending cuts that don't involve screwing the poorest people in the country in order to help people who are already doing fine, then I'll consider the possibility that you aren't full of baloney.

Look at it this way. What if Trout actually detests the idea of taking some fly-fishing noob as myself fishing? What if all he really wanted was the business my companies could offer him? What if the only way he is able to get face-to-face time to make a pitch to get that business is through a fishing trip? Do you then feel that he should be able to write-off the expense of that business trip?

Play along with the 'what if's' .. I'm curious your answer.
