What's new

Alec Burks = The MAN

Also, in the past I have been a Batum hater, but damn is he doing good this year. I say we screw Portland and sign him to a front loaded contract. Burks and Batum starting wings would be killer.

I have had a secret love for Batum for a couple years. He could be the missing wing that the Jazz need.

Anyone know what Batum's market value will be? Along with what Portland's cap situation looks like? I would be willing to slightly overpay just to **** them over.

I am not sure but I am sure around 8 million is about what he will go for. Front load that to give him a 10 million signing bonus and Portland will probably have to let that one go. Karma can be a sweet sweet thing.

Glad I'm not the only one struggling today.

Anyone that thinks Jeremy Evans deserves anything more than 10 minutes a night doesn't watching basketball.

Sorry to bring this thread back to Burks ;) but i missed watching the game last night. I read that he stood up to Haywood but never saw what Haywood did to him or what Burks did in response--can anyone share some details?

As for Batum: Doesn't the new CBA make front loaded contracts more difficult?

On Hayward: Dude gets lots of praise, but I don't always agree. I could knit-pick ( thats an old timers term for finding small faults) but I will just say that he plays lots of minutes, but he only occasionally makes plays. I hope he learns how to make more plays.

I have become a huge fan of Burks now that we've had a chance to see him. A few gems from his draft express profile:

his 18.8% free throw rate is easily best in the class.
Burks' ability to quickly create shots is evident in his transition numbers, as 21.8% of his possessions come on the break, the highest in the class. Burks is a talented shot creator in the halfcourt as well, with 16.1% of his possessions coming on pick-and-rolls (1st overall) and 19.0% coming on isolations (fourth overall). Burks' 0.897 PPP on isolations ranks dead in the middle of the class at ninth, but given the defensive attention he drew, it's still impressive.

Another interesting note on Burks' isolations is the equal rate he drove left and right, having 53 possessions on the season going right and 54 going left. His PPP was equally impressive in both directions, at 0.849 going right and 0.963 going left.
Burks ranked third in the class finishing around the basket at 1.242 PPS, and that doesn't take into account the ridiculous rate at which he gets to the free-throw line, where he gets a ton of easy points with his 82.5% shooting.
Burks is a shot creator, a skill that is highly coveted at the professional level. Over two-thirds of his offense is generated by himself, be it in isolation situations, in transition or in pick-and-roll opportunities. He ranks in the top five amongst our top 100 prospects in free throw attempts, and (more impressively) is second overall in makes because of the stellar 82.4% he shoots from the line.
Capable of driving in either direction, Burks is a smooth yet explosive slasher with an outstanding second gear. He has excellent speed in the open floor and the body control and ball-handling skills needed to slither his way around opponents and get to the rim.

Burks is not yet a great finisher around the basket, as indicated by his sub-50% 2-point percentage. He must continue to fill out his frame as he struggles to finish through contact in traffic. He's a scorer through and through, though. He uses the glass nicely with reverses and such and has a knack for finding a way to put the ball in the basket, even in tight spaces.

Unlike most big-time scorers from small(er) colleges, Burks is a fairly unselfish player who is more than capable of making the extra pass. Even if he's often asked to be the one creating and finishing shots for his team (particularly late in the shot clock), he's a nice weapon to have in a half-court offense thanks to his solid court vision and good basketball IQ. When Colorado's starting point guard goes to the bench, Burks will man the position, which is a good indication of the versatility he brings to the table.

Defensively, Burks is somewhat of a mixed bag, but he shows good potential on this end of the floor. With his good size, nice length, excellent lateral quickness and solid anticipation skills, he has all the tools needed to guard his position successfully in the NBA.

He generally puts in a good effort on the defensive end, getting low in his stance and often guarding the opposing team's best scorer—and doing so effectively for the most part. He already ranks as the second-best rebounding wing player in this draft class (after Travis Leslie), which has to be considered a good sign.

With his narrow frame and lack of strength, Burks has some issues fighting through screens and will lose his focus occasionally, but based on what we're seeing there's no reason he can't be a good defender at the NBA level.
seems to understand spacing, crashes the glass well, and often finds himself in the right place at the right time around the basket.

I left out the parts about his jumper, but even with those criticisms, it was mentioned he was correcting his tendency to fade which gives hope that he can become a shooter as well. I stand by my comment that he has all the tools to become the leader of this team. It will be fun to watch whether that happens.

Jazz were running the break off a turnover and Burks drove straight down the middle of the lane towards Haywood. Haywood crossed his arms, stepped into Burks and shoved him pretty hard with his forearms. I personally thought it was a borderline flagrant 1, but I'm sure most people that aren't Jazz fans would call it a "good, hard foul". Burks didn't hesitate going right after Haywood and jawing a bit, but he was quickly held back by one of our players (ironically, I think it was Favors). He didn't bitch out like Favors did when Dirk smacked the ball out of his hand, or when J.J. Barea walked into Hayward when he was standing at the line about to take free throws. Basically, he showed the kind of confidence and attitude Earl Watson does every night that we love, and the one trait most glaringly missing from Hayward and Favors.

Loved his quotes. Kid's going to be good thats for sure. The sooner we cut ties with CJ and Raja the better.

Burks shows more that Hayward right now. So stop just cuz you love hayward because he is a white mediocre player doesn't mean that he is better than burks.

Haven't you all seen the size of Hayward's ***? and it's soooo round too! He might only shoot 24% from three, but let's face it this team isn't going to win squat. We might as well have Hayward's luscious bubble and childlike charm to stare at.

And I think the Hayward should be a 2 thing is clearly bogus. It doesn't matter if he is a two or 3, he has shown he can guard either well enough. I think he does better against 3's personally.

I agree. If he plays the 2 spot he will be matched up against guards that are too quick for him.

It's time for Hayward to go to the bench and earn his starting spot back.

Harris
Burks
Sap
Big Al
Kanter

Do it now.

I actually think that Hayward would do better coming off the bench. The starters all have the "stand around" syndrome thanks to the way the offense is run. Hayward with Burks, Favors, Kanter and Watson sounds like a great line up. I think it will also help to instill more confidence into all the young guys.

I am much more impressed by this Kanter and Burks then I am by Favors and Hayward. If I could just give Favors and Hayward that same aggressiveness and attitude...
