Hekate's Case:

LogGrad98's Case:

Team philosophy:

I looked at my star player and thought, how can I let him shine. So I thought I needed to surround himn with people that could eliminate the biggest knocks against him: 1) Lack of a killer instinct, and 2) The perception that he just isn’t clutch.

Also, I knew that LeBron needed plenty of time with the ball in his hands, and needed to be surrounded both by players that can take over as needed, but that do not necessarily need the ball to do so.

Third, I wanted players that can play all over the floor. I needed scoring under the basket, I needed lights out shooting, I needed top notch athleticism, and most importantly I needed players that give my star as many targets as possible to get everyone involved.

Fourth, I needed intelligence at all spots, at every depth. Players with extremely high BBall IQ. I got that, in spades.

Lastly, I thought about chemistry. I wanted a group that cared only about winning and doing anything it took to win, and would gladly play off of each other. No fighting about who gets to be the star, just playing hard on each possession to get the job done.

I picked the team to fit this philosophy.

As to matchups. I think individual matchups are over-rated. It is a team game. At best you can look at back-court and front-court. But it is important to put your best team forward for each game.

Here is my rotation for today’s match:

PG – Isiah Thomas – Damian Lillard
SG – Vince Carter – Jeff Hornacek – Bruce Bowen
SF – LeBron James – Bruce Bowen – Detlef Schrempf
PF – Artis Gilmore – Kevin Love – Shawn Kemp – Detlef Schrempf
C – Mehmet Okur – Rudy Gobert – Artis Gilmore

Back-court:

Isiah Thomas – as clutch as they come. Top notch defender. One of the top warriors to ever play the game. Still holds the finals record for points in a quarter, and did it on a hobbled ankle. Played the game at his best in tandem with his partner, Joe Dumars, who did a fair share of handling the ball for the Pistons championship teams. Now that partner is LBJ. No better combo to be had.

Vince Carter – can take over games on both ends of the floor. Excellent perimeter defender and one of the top athletes in the game, even today. At his best a 40% 3 Pt shooter. Need him to hunker down and stop a top scorer? Check. Need him to go off for 40? Check.

So the back-court offsets Hekates size in Havlicek and Robertson with generational levels of athleticism and skills. Isiah/Vince will give any combination of Havlicek/Robertson/Arenas/Price/Green fits in the back-court.

Front-court

LBJ – not much needs to be said. Even on an individual level there is no one on the Hekate's team that can stand toe to toe with Bron. He can truly play 1-5 as needed. To help him not get tired, I have plenty of backup that can change the entire look of the game. This team can let LBJ do what he does best, dominate and rest. Hayward cannot do much against LBJ when the rest of the team is fully occupied.

LeBron to Carter in this one...heh.

Artis Gilmore/Mehmet Okur – I decided to throw a curve ball at the strong post defender Hekate has in Hayes and Russell by playing an inside/outside game and including one of the best post defenders the game has seen in Gilmore. At his best Gilmore averaged better than 5 blocks for an entire season. Okur is a big body, this gives me 2 in essence 7 footers, against 2 6’9” players in the post. Neither Russell nor Hayes were known as scoring machines, and now one of them at least will be pulled away from the basket chasing Okur on pick and pops. Okur has a high and quick release, look for him to get plenty of 3s at the start in this one. This will open up the floor for the wizardry of Isiah and LBJ.

Get used to this in this series. Gilmore over Hayes. There is no one to match Gilmore's length and athleticism on Hekate's team.

Flexible to the demands of the situation. Let’s go small-ball, and bring in Kemp at the 5, Love at the 4, and Hornacek at the 2 with Thomas and Bron. Wanna run them to death? We can go Thomas, Lillard, Carter, LBJ and Kemp. Let’s bring in Schrempf, a forgotten gem in a 2-way player that can hit the 3 at over a 50% clip, to give the King a rest and surround him with defense in Gobert, Gilmore, Bowen and Thomas. Let’s rain 3s with Lillard, Horny, Bowen, Love and Okur. We can match anything you can put together, with unselfish players that just want to win.

Rodman really loves Schrempf....like maybe too much.

Even at individual spot. Gobert will shut down action at the rim. No rim jobs here my friends! Love can score all over the floor and in bunches. Hornacek was an under-rated defender and adds another ball handler and deeply intelligent player. Schrempf and Kemp are multi-positional players. Kemp was athletic enough to play 3-5. Three 7-footers and 2 of the best defensive centers to ever lace’em up.

Oh yeah, and a guy name LeBron.

General best stats for the team:

PG – Isiah Thomas – 21 PTS, 4.5 REB, 13.9 AST, 2.3 ST
SG – Vince Carter – 27.6 PTS, 5.5 REB, 3.9 AST, 1.5 ST, 1.1 BL, 41% 3s
SF – LeBron James – 26.8 PTS, 8 REB, 7.3 AST, 1.7 ST, 1 BL, 41% 3s
PF – Kevin Love – 20.2 PTS, 15.2 REB, 2.5 AST, 42% 3s
C – Artis Gilmore – 23.8 PTS, 17.8 REB, 2.7 AST, 5 BL, 60% FG

PG – Damian Lillard – 21 PTS, 4.6 REB, 6.2 AST, 1.2 ST, 39% 3s
SG – Jeff Hornacek – 20 PTS, 5 REB, 5.1 AST, 2 ST, 51% FG, 44% 3s
SF – Bruce Bowen – 7 PTS, 2.2 REB, 2.9 AST, 44% 3s

Peja wasn't a shooting guard. He was 6'10" and slow. He was a SF in his day and would probably be a stretch 4 now

Neither of these teams deserve to win.

Hekate doesn't because his talent just isn't that great, and he put Peja as a shooting guard.

Log doesn't because he put Okur as his starting center. Holy cow. LMFAO. That is horrible.

But also because he didn't choose his team because he thinks they are good, but because he's trying to manipulate us. He claims he thinks that players from the 60's were so great, but didn't pick anyone close to there except for Gilmore. Also, he is trying to manipulate us with the stretch big idea and jazz man. Except it doesn't pass. Okur at the center position would make your defense horrendous. I would have accepted Rudy there over Okur.

A quote from log in my thread...

This kind of thinking goes right out the window around here when we start comparing players from different generations. To Jazz Fanzers a single championship in the 2000's is worth 10 championships in the 60's, and by extension any players on the single championship team is equal to any 10 players from the 60's. Barf.

I am sorry I can't provide a write-up but I don't have the time.

All I can say is I have a very flexible backcourt. If I have to slow LBJ I can play Draymond at SF with Ibaka and Russell. Arvydas could make a 3-pointer when needed as well and Hayes had a good jump shot up to Ft line. That can create many possibilities for Robertson and others.

I think Log wins, but that's gonna be it. I'm not really seeing the cohesive nature of his team-- Zeke and Lebron make sense, but a 4/5 combo of Memo and Art don't. Artis is a superb post-defender, but I'm not sure how good his lateral-mobility will be if you're going up against point-guards who will screen you into oblivion. It took three top 10 all-time defenders in Pippen, Jordan, and Rodman to beat the Jazz in 6 games-- note their frame sizes. Those are the sorts of players you need to stymie all-time great PGs.

I also don't remember putting Peja at sg. I probably did in Annual thread I would start Draymond for this game.

I bet both teams qualify because of vote closeness. But neither team is that good.

You never specified, I just assumed Peja would start because he was one of your first five picks. Also, no way to ask you because your messages are full.

Sorry about that. I have been very busy the last few days and will peolly will the next few days.

Hekate - why don't you specify the lineup now so White Choc can change it in the first post of the thread?

At least that way voters will know what they're voting?

You can still edit this for Hekate right?

I think a lot of people here are underrating a prime Shawn Kemp with Lebron to deliver him the ball. Apparently even LogGrad98 who has him third string. . .

If it was me I would have started Havlicek at SG backing up by Rick Barry. Then start Stojakovic at SF backing up by Draymond and Hayward.

Elvin Hayes backed up by Ibaka is sufficient.

Well, he didn't clear his messages and still no reply on here.
