Am I racist?

I'm pretty sure Indians are from India, a country in Southern Asia.

No one 'earns' stereotypes-- they're constructed by those in power, often with the goal of belittling the powerless.

Yeah, 'cause Asians are peeerfectly good drivers.

What about the white stereotype of pretentiousness and or racism? What powerful group constructed those?

Pretentiousness isn't a white stereotype. You can't think of many examples, can you? Let me help you. No rhythm, uptight and reserved, soulless suburbanites, etc. There are also plenty of stereotypes about specific white groups like California liberals or Southerners.

Maybe it's different in Canada, but have you spent much time on a reservation? They really do fulfill all stereotypes.

Southerners are redneck inbreds tho. Just look at PKM.

I tried for years to be a racist. But no matter what I did, I always ended up hating everyone equally.

Stereotypes are contructed and supported by all segments of society. Used to belittle anyone different.

Edit: Yes racism is a very real problem. However I do not feel every little joke or comment needs debate or even rebuttal.

One has to take into consideration the person making the comment, the tone they said it in, the theme of the discussion and who they said it to. Not just what was said.

I agree with you that no one "earns" them though.

I lived in the Virginia for 3 years, and I never felt discriminated against (actually I've yet to encounter meaningful discrimination in my 17 years living in the US). It was interesting because there is a lot of racism between whites and blacks over there. Since I'm neither, both groups often felt comfortable bitching about one another to me, both assuming that I must share their views.

So I'm curious then, do people here actually think Asians aren't any worse as drivers than whites?

Do you have any quantitative data one way or another? Barring that, I don't see how forming an opinion is even possible. By default, I doubt a diverse human group that makes up a third of the world's population is somehow inferior at a simple and mundane task such as driving.

What has 4 legs and says, "Ho dee doe, ho dee doe"?

No way to prove it, but i feel like, whether real or perceived, whenever I am driving behind someone who is driving erratic or extremely slow or just terribly in general that when I finally pass them it is always a woman.

You selectively note what confirms your preconceived notions. It is just human nature. From now on, every time you notice someone driving erratically, check if they're a man or a woman. Do it over a period of, say, two months, then share with us the count. That'd be an interesting experiment.

It's possible just like us forming our opinions on Utah Jazz basketball players is possible. The eye test. Game footage or in this case experiences And in my case, I've had about 50 awful experiences driving before (i.e., someone going 60mph in the left hand lane lane in a 65mph zone when people should be going 80 or so) and Asians have been the offender in the far majority of those instances.

Unless you live in Northern California, that is simply impossible to believe. Asians are too tiny a minority in most of the US. If that was the case, the situation in China would be post-apocalyptic.

Not really. It's the relative unfamiliarity with the environment that is the cause. I bet if we moved to Shanghai we'd all be awful drivers.

That would be and I will do my best to perform said experiment. Back to my original conundrum though. Either its a mexican thing or only the mexicans that come on my property to buy something try this tom foolery. Its not my preconceived notions getting in the way its the facts of what has happened.

This is over the span of about 20 years. I live in NJ which is one of the most diverse states in the Union. So actually it's not impossible at all.

Honduras driving is damn near post apocalyptic. Stunning.
