Anchor Baby!

Moe it has either something to do with this

or this

Unathletic white dudes denying Kentucky a championship. Never ceases to make me (and others) laugh.

To be that tall and mobile means you are pretty athletic. Have you ever seen what regular people who are that tall and not pro athletes move like?

So is there any actual, you know, evidence that there exists some kind of significant 'anchor baby' phenomenon. OR, is this similar to 'voter fraud' or 'welfare queen' narratives invented by the right wing so as to smear some group that the racist/bigot element of right wing base (and to whom sadly Republican politicians continually pander) dislikes (e.g., blacks)?

Welfare queen. There's always gonna be that one guy in California that collects food stamps and buys sushi and uncooked lobster. As such, it makes perfect sense to cut off EVERYONE.

Not only is it a right wing myth, the child has citizenship, but they cannot petition to get their parents any sort of immigration status until they are 21 years old. So it isn't even a real thing at all.

Oh, and I should clarify. 'Evidence' here means actual, systematic, objective, unbiased evidence that this is a wide-spread phenomenon. "I know of a guy who knows of a guy" type anecdotes are not evidence.

The guys who work for us say that pretty much everybody knows about it and they definitely try to make it happen, easier life for their kids for sure. We're currently trying to find ways to get them legalized, but it's a difficult process. It's certainly a real thing though.

I'm not disputing that it does happen. My question is how systematic/pervasive is it, and what evidence actually exists to demonstrate this?

I'm skeptical that it is as large of a problem as the right wing suggests.

Basing national policies on a collection of anecdotes is not, IMHO, a good way to go about doing public policies.

I don't disagree. Repubs are fighting a losing battle. I don't think the policy would hurt, it would actually probably help, but they're just pissing people off. They can't keep on being the party of no if they want to succeed.

Umm having a baby here doesn't give the parents citizenship or any legitimate immigration status. Anyone care to dispute that?

JEJ, the ONLY thing you need to know here is that if it exists in Dutch's mind, it exists. Period.

The repubs are beyond idiotic on this broad issue of immigration. They are ensuring that latinos vote blue for decades to come.

The Dems have to be loving this.

So, when I first heard the term "anchor baby" it was several years ago, probably around 2007. It was used pejoratively without a doubt and to describe the practice of illegal immigrants coming here (the U.S.), having a baby, and thus doing gain instant citizenship or legal immigration status themselves.

That notion of what an "anchor baby" is, is completely false. The parents do not gain legal status by giving birth to a U.S. citizen. The child is a U.S. citizen. But of course, what good is that citizenship if their parents can't live here? Not much.

According to Donald Trump Mexico is sending us (which is false, Mexico doesn't send us anyone, individual humans inside Mexico bring themselves, but whatever) rapists, murderers and drug dealers. Is that what's going on with this "anchor baby" crisis? Are rapists coming here and giving birth? Is this an elaborate drug trafficking scheme? Are murderers manipulating the U.S. constitution using their newborn children? No, no and no!

So what's the issue here? Too many brown people? Is that the real crisis? Well, if that's it, and it seems to me that it is, count me as completely unconcerned. I'm not threatened by a rising population of latinos in the U.S.. If you are, why are you?
