What's new

And so it begins.......

First question is, are the Boy Scouts publicly funded in any way?

Can other private clubs, not open to the public, receive tax-exempt status in California? If yes, this move is discrimination, and it should be defeated. If no, then this just levels the playing field.

I assume if they are non profit.

I'm for gay marriage but I'm for protecting religion too. If the government or state can strip a non-profit of their tax exempt couldn't it strip a religion?

This is why civil unions is possibly the better route.
A likely death knell for the BSA if found constitutional. The LDS Church is the largest sponsoring charter organization of the BSA. Know why they don't sponsor Girl Scouts for LDS girls? Because the GS are in no way affilaited with the BSA and are a much more liberal organization. Instead, the LDS has "Activity Day Girls" for children. Expect the LDS Church - and likely a few others - to disband their troops and come up with a different solution if this bill is eventually passed and clears legal challenges.

This does have far-reaching effects upon a host of other organizations. If enacted, I'd expect the case to be argued all the way up to the Supreme Court.

Point proven

Kidding, I'm an eagle scout also .... Mom did most of it because I thought scouting was weird. Still though, scouting is about as gay as it gets.

All of my camp outs ended in fights. We were the Mromon troop amoung alot of Baptist ones. The good ole days...

Plus all girl scouts do is sell box cookies. I want my wife to learn how to make homemade cookies.
Ain't that the truth. We pulled my girl out of girl scouts this year because that IS the basic reason for their existence. And if you can't get your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to buy enough cookies, your daughter is looked upon as a GS failure.

More than the Methodists? Since when?
Mormons are the largest religious sponsors of Scouting, with 38,000 units and 420,000 Scouts.
United Methodist officials, whose denomination has 11,000 Boy Scout units and over 370,000 Scouts
Catholic Churches are the third-largest religious sponsor of Scout units, with over 8,500 groups and nearly 300,000 Scouts.
Southern Baptist churches are the sixth-largest religious sponsor of Boy Scout units, with over 4,000 groups and over 100,000 scouts.
