Ante Tomic Ain't Soft No Mo?

While Barcelona are no stranger to the accomplishment that is having the best defense in Europe, one certain name on the roster had been quite unfamiliar to that territory, up until he joined Pascual’s ranks in the summer of 2012. A lanky gem that had remained unwrought for the most of his career, Ante Tomic was always a liability on defense. When he left Real Madrid in the summer, many thought Laso’s side wouldn’t miss him as well as that he would be a definite downgrade on defense over Boni N’Dong and Fran Vazquez. Almost a year later now, those who doubted Tomic’s abilities, including me, are proven wrong and have witnessed the redemption story of one of the finest big men in European basketball, if not in the world.

To say that Tomic has been a key contributor for Barcelona this season would surely be underselling it. Croatian center has been “the” difference maker, the guy upon whom was Pascual’s heightened. Barcelona allowed their opposition a crushing 88.6 points per 100 possessions while Tomic was on the floor —would rank as the best in the league— meanwhile teams managed to score 100.1 points when Tomic is not around.

Still looks kinda soft in the game highlight reels to me.

What are the chances this guy comes and plays for the Jazz this season? I don't have a clue about his contract situation or his desire to play in the NBA.

He still is soft, but he's not fluffy cotton white anymore. He actually uses his size now, makes some plays on d,and is a little more built up.
He was a turnstile Shawn Bradley type before.

He has improved overall (finally) there is no denying that.

I feel a front loaded contract say 8 mil next year (jazz have to spend it some where) then 6 mil, 6 mil so a 3 yr 20 mil contract. the front load is to help with a buyout. beyond what the jazz can do.

he is making less then that now.

Has he said he isn't interested in coming to the NBA?

Seems like a pretty good fit on this team if Paul and Al are gone.

...Plus with Malone as the big man coach, we'll beat the soft right out of him.

I would love to see this kid get a shot. Who knows how he translates, but he is plenty compelling.

Anyone know what it'll take to get him here next season?

He'll come over late in his career a la Arvydas Sabonis and help lead us to a title.

If he's good enough.

And if the buyout goes into his salary. I.E. if paying the 8mm/yr or whatever for his former club and that's the total price. But I don't think it's this way. His former team gets nada back. So they say no. Give us something.

Otherwise, there are plenty $6-8mm bigs,

Or you can choose against blowing cap space for the sake of blowing cap space and wait until someone desperately needs to get rid of Kurt Thomas, Matt Harpring, or Tom Gugliotta.

That too. No way for us to scout him to opine, if he's good then bring him, but he has to be pretty damn good. Even then, might as well fill it up elsewhere and then use his rights to jump over the cap. It's a nice little loophole, I think.
