Any scuba divers?

I got certified after years of putting it off, and will be surprising my wife with a trip for our anniversary in May. She's been diving since she was real young so I was wondering if any veteran scuba divers reading this had any recommendations? Places that would knock the socks off really experienced divers (and that has areas for beginners like me)? I'm hoping to book the trip and flight within the next few weeks so any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I am not a scuba diver. I have never gone so take this as you will. I hear that the northern coast of Honduras has some of the best diving in the world. There is an island there that is supposed to be pure tourist crap and all set up. Try this link.

Just make sure it's a dual surfing spot and scuba spot. That way once you score the brownie points for getting cert and taking her on a trip to scuba, you can have some real fun and spend 90% of your time there perfecting the great art of surfing instead.

One of the coolest places I ever dove was off the coast in SoCal in the kelp forests. Not bright and colorful like the tropical coral reefs in Hawaii but there were tons of fish and the kelp grows from 100' down up to the surface. You swim through the long strands of kelp with fish darting all around you and the sunlight filtering down. Kind of a surreal scene. We even came across a big *** green moray that scared the bejeesus out of me when it poked it's head out of the rocks. We took a 2 hour boat ride out of Channel Islands harbor in Ventura to get to the dive site... I want to say it was Anacapa Island.

^^ Beautiful man just breath taking. There are so many just awesome sites to see in this world. The more of them I see the more I want to see more of them

I'm a diver. Go there!

I spent a month in the Bay Islands of Honduras (Utila) and the diving was amazing. Got my divemaster there. If I were you I would go straight to Roatan. Perfect blend of colorful coral and fish with the chance to see some whale sharks if you are there at the right time (march-april, aug-sept.). Pretty cheap as well - but getting more expensive each year.

That is just amazing Bluenote. Man I bet you will never forget that.

Anybody ever scuba-dipped at the Heber Crater/ Homestead Crater giant cave hot pot.... or whatever it's called? That's kind of a cool place. Not cool enough to vacation to Utah for specifically or anything, but cool enough to drive from the bigger cities in the state to go check out at least once.

I dove the crater last year. It was cool for the experience - to say you dove in a crater and for the refresher, but I wouldn't go too far out of my way to do it again. Like you said, an overnight to the homestead/park city that includes skiing and diving the crater would be fun.

Has anyone tried diving at Seabase? Went there last year and that place is a trip. Very cool staff, really poor visibility- but a chance to pet two enormous nurse sharks. Not many people realize that there are nurse sharks and tropical fish swimming around in the west desert.

I'm certified, I've only been in three places but loved each one! So cal kelp forest is way cool, the only problem is you have to wear a 7 mil wetsuit and it restricts you movement! Hawaii was amazing we were there when all the humppedback whales were there, while we didn't see them you could hear them the whole time you dived! My last placed I dove was my favorite sodwana bay, south africa! There is no river with in 50 miles giving you excellent visibility and a current that takes you right along the reef, requiring little effort as you dive!

Just looking at that picture of the kelp forest makes my skin crawl. I have a massive case of hydrophobia, and man, you couldn't pay me enough to get in there. I can't even swim in a pool by myself, ffs...
