Are Our Young Players Really That Talented?

This is from today's Salt Lake Tribune column on early entry players. The quote if from Trey Burke's father.
"The way I looked at it, there’s a certain number of guards that go in the first round," his father and agent, Benji Burke, said. "He wasn’t one of the three or four. He wasn’t going to jump over Damian [Lillard] or Kendall [Marshall]. He wasn’t going to jump over Marcus Teague, who just won a national championship. I told him, ‘Trey, come back. Get free advertising from Michigan. Win a Big Ten title. If you do what you’re supposed to do, you’re going to be one of the guys nobody can jump over.’"
So Trey wasn't as talented as Kendall Marshall who got waived by the Suns and was passed over by the Jazz when they signed Garrett. Perhaps our young guys might not be starters but bench players in actuality.

Have you ever tried not being so weird?

I don't think his father was implying that the other players were better than his son, he was looking at where his son was in his development. For the most part his father was right on and gave his son great advice instead of being pig-headed and saying you are going to jump over those guys and then when it doesn't happen then his father would have some explaining to do to his son.

I don't think Trey will be better than Lillard (he was drafted 6th and Trey was 9th) so most people had him rated higher. I already think he is better than both Marshall and Marcus Teague. I think people have to realize that our young guys aren't just young they are REALLY young. It is way too early to be asking the question "Are our young guys as good as Jazz fans think? However, I am sure most fans overrate their players so there is a good chance that our young players aren't as good as we think they are which doesn't mean they aren't good but perhaps Jazz fans had overestimated these guys to begin with. Some Jazz fans (like most fans) just think that if a player puts on a Jazz uniform they turn into super heros and when they do not they are ready to trade them in a heartbeat.

The sad thing about our young talent is that I don't see any of them making all-star teams. They are talented, just not THAT talented.

Lillard is good, really good. Marshall and Teague have both been released and spent time in the DLeague. I realize he worked on his game and got better. I'm hoping our second round draft pick comes over from Europe and gives Trey some competition in camp for the starting job next year and I hope Garrett enters that competition as well.

I do not like chuking guards like Trey Burke. Kendall Marshall was the right player for the Jazz, because he´s a "Pass first" guy and we just need players who can create some offense and hit open shots like Kendall does.

I think it's also perception. Burke was not perceived as better than the others going into the season. The others had been projected as 1st rounders. Lillard, of course, just exploded and pushed his way to the top. I agree with Trey's father; it was wise to wait. There are generally only a few teams needing a PG and if players are rated close in terms of the "BPA" argument, then team needs and size come into play.

AS for our young guys, I think Burks could be an all-star at some point; Hayward too. But they're also up against players from bigger markets. Starting lineup is all about popularity with fans; Utah players will rarely win that battle so they'll have to be subs to make the all-star team.

Short answer:

Yes. Remains to be seen if the realize that potential

Kendall Marshall has the most PG friendly coach of all time, and he has come back down to Earth. Burke is way better.
