What's new

Are you better off than 5 years ago?

So, I am better off than where I was 5 years ago, but I'm only 27. Didn't lose anything to the recession. All of my debt is by my choice, such as student loans, cars, credit cards.. stuff like that, and we are actually getting on top of it now.

When I was a teenager I would wash my money & roll around in it naked. Never got on top of my dirty debts though.

Not exactly.

Using CPI, it's safe to estimate that there has been approximately 10% inflation since 2007. And as you know, inflation is the market mechanism where we'd be able to gauge the devaluation of the dollar.

The other 10% comes from increased customer demand - in other words, franklin drinks a helluva lot more now than he did 5 years ago.

You're forgetting, the government has adjusted and changed it's CPI over the years.
But even using this so-called new CPI, inflation has steadily exploded since 1913's "Federal Reserve Act".
The chart: https://www.economics-charts.com/cpi/cpi-1800-2005.html

I agree with the 10 percent pertaining to consumer demand, but yes.... the other 90 percent comes from inflation which is directly related to the Feds issuance and control over the U.S. dollar.

So do you believe that inflation is not a naturally occurring phenomenon? You feel it's caused completely by the Fed?

I am better off in spite of the economy. I was laid off as my division went under. I took a crappy temporary job and went back to school for a second degree and got into a job that I love. Financially I make slightly less right now but I have been great with my money and am better off than 4 years ago. So the bad economy has been good for me.

I believe it's intentionally caused by the Fed, but considering we don't know who it's managers are, we can only assume.
I continue to look upon central bank managers quotes of the past as my reference point.

"The few who understand the system, will either be so interested from it's profits or so dependant on it's favors, that there will be no opposition from that class." - Rothschild Brothers of London, 1863

"Give me control of a nation's money and I care not who makes it's laws." -Mayer Amschel Bauer Rothschild

Ah. OK, I am starting to understand your viewpoint.

FWIW, there are natural reasons for inflation to occur. Without going into a deep economic discussion, just know that they exist and as long as there are advancements in technology, production, and value in goods and services, there will be naturally occurring inflation. If you want we can get into it, but that only will work if you're open to the idea that inflation originates somewhere other than the Fed.

My complete viewpoint isn't necessarily that "all" inflation is caused by the Fed.

I am very well aware of natural occurring inflation, as their were always small spikes of inflationary price hikes before the fed was in place.
We can always get into it if you like, because I'm always open to all conversation, regardless of circumstance.

But IMHO, all you have to look at is the long term CPI in order to see that central banks are the main cause of inflation over time.
Not just the Fed, but all central banks.

He saved the world from failure & many want to crucify him for it.

Bernanke has made natural gas prices go to multi-decade lows!
Low natural gas prices have given US manufacturers up to a 20% advantage over Chinese production!
Mortgage interest rates are cheap & home ownership is the most affordable it has ever been!
Dollar destroying Ben Bernanke for president!

Parabolic calculation is parabolic run for the hillzz!!!

How many Americans did Andrew Jackson kill by causing the worst depression ever? I've heard speculation that he's somewhere between Pol Pot & Stalin. They say Ron Paul or Peter Schiff would be the deadliest dictator of all time.

I make the same now that I did before, except I lost some of my benefits (no cell phone reimbursement, no job completion bonuses, insurance went to ****). I live in a smaller house now than I did before. There was a time when I was making a lot less than pre-crash. But I'm happy with my current situation. Is that better or worse?

I thought this was a very good letter:

https://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/opinion/54865617-82/health-2011-act-affordable.html.csp

I have excellent individual health insurance. But because of my $1,000 deductible, and I felt so great, I neglected seeing my doctor for yearly physicals. Then I read that preventative medicine, including the annual physical, was now covered because of President Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, so I made an appointment.

During the examination, my doctor became suspicious of the way my thyroid felt and ordered more tests. A biopsy confirmed cancer.

During the operation, they removed the thyroid and discovered that the cancer had spread to my lymph nodes, so they removed them, too. I’m feeling great now, but I’m not out of the water.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states that in 2011 "the Affordable Care Act provided approximately 54 million Americans with at least one new free preventive service."

When Republicans ask, "Are you better off with Obama?" My answer is yes! I’m still alive.
