Article: Best and worst draft picks of all time.

So many options......

Jose Ortiz, Luther Wright, Quincy Lewis, Borchardt, Snyder, Hayward....

jk on the last one.

Copout picking both Karl and John. As much as we love Stockton our best pick ever was Karl Malone.

I slightly disagree. Malone was not expected to be there when the Jazz drafted but thankfully Dallas had Detlef Schrempf rated really high and then the slide happened. The Jazz went into that draft targeting Keith Lee (talk about dodging a bullet!) but he was taken earlier than expected and Malone dropped into their lap. Stockton was their target all along and kudos go to Scott Layden for that. For identifying and targeting Stockton, I call his selection as the best ever for the Jazz. I hope that rambling mess explains my reasoning.

Boss.

Contextually though, picked over Finals MVP Tony Parker in order to save some $? Pretty bad.

You're going to have to cite something to support that that had something to do with money because I've never heard that. And this isn't like picking Bowie 2nd (after Hakeem) and before Jordan. It was the late 20's.

He was drafted 28th by the Spurs. This has been a sore spot for Jazz fans, who know Utah chose Raul Lopez from Spain at No. 24, when it could have been Parker.

At the time, the Jazz were spending at an unprecedented rate. Karl Malone was making $17 million, John Stockton $7 million and Greg Ostertag $6.9 million. (Yes, Ostertag made nearly as much as Stockton.) Andrei Kirilenko was on his way to Utah that offseason.

The Jazz already had 13 players under contract when they selected Lopez, who still had a year left on his European contract, while Parker's was up. Experts were split on who was the better player. By taking Lopez, the Jazz avoided paying his salary that year and kept him in the wings for Stockton's retirement.

Looking at his highlight tape before the draft. He was quick as hell and had some serious playmaking skills. Think his two knee injuries screwed him.

Agree. Lopez could have been a great player if not for the injuries. Plus he was drafted at #24. There are better choices for worst pick.

1987 - Jose Ortiz #15
1988 - Eric Leckner #17
1993 - Luther Wright #18
1999 - Quincey Lewis #19
2004 - Kirk Snyder #16

And that's not even including the busts picked in the 20's or the players that were just "meh." Jazz ineptitude in drafting likely caused them a couple of championships.

It's amazing how an innocent mistyping of "caused" instead of "cost" gives the sentence the exact opposite meaning.

Thanks for the catch. Was originally going to say "caused them to miss out on." What can I say? It's past 11:00 pm and I need some sleep...not going to waste time proofreading a post.
