Baseball offseason thread

Can u tell me anything about Swanson's game? Don't know much about him other then he was the first pick in 2015.

Diamondbacks got a good one in Miller. He had a breakout season last year. Easily the braves best pitcher. Was a class act too.

Will be interesting to see how all these young arms in the braves farm system develop.

Yeah I saw him play a few times because I try and catch the College World series/playoffs every year. He's more of a doubles hitter than homeruns. He's above average at everything, not crazy spectacular. He's solid though. He's fast and a great fielder.

I wouldn't have taken him 1st but I don't this sorta stuff nearly as well as basketball.

I don't.

Maybe I'm unrealistic, but we have a bunch of quality arms already. I like him, I do. But I'd rather keep the stuff we have in the pipeline and go with the excessive number of arms we have, even with trading Andrew Miller away.

SELF CORRECTION:

They didn't trade Andrew Miller. Duh.

They traded Justin Wilson. The OTHER hard throwing left-hander on the roster. :)

As a Yankee fan, I like this deal. Perhaps he can give us some more consistency at 2nd Base.

Regardless, I LOVE that the Yanks are not setting themselves up to be destroyed by large contracts in the future. We'll lose 2 huge contracts right when Bryce Harper becomes a free agent... which is fabulous!

Wait, wasn't Castro terrible last year? Isn't he one of the worst defensive infielders, or am I thinking of someone else?

He had a bad year at the plate last year, but normally he does pretty well.

He also was being used at SS (and didn't do a good job), but as soon as they moved him to 2B after bringing up the new guy his defense got a lot better. Go figure.

Jason Heyward signs a monster deal with the Cubs.

@GDubCub
Heyward deal less than $185m. Believed to be eight years.

Defensive monster who is 26 and hits a good average.

Sorry but I don't see paying 23M per, 26 years old or not, for a lifetime .268 hitter/.355 OBP guy whose best two power years were 27 and 18 HR's respectively as even close to a prudent move. The guy basically is who he is and hasn't really improved one iota since his first couple years.

Another former #1 pick gets moved -- seems like a bed deal for the Astros..

#Phillies have acquired RHPs Vincent Velasquez, Mark Appel, Thomas Eshelman and Harold Arauz, as well as LHP Brett Oberholtzer

For Ken Giles and 1 more player

As a braves fan I can honestly say he doesn't hit that well. Not bad, but just average, and he doesn't hit as many homers as he should. Elite defense and base running skills, but doesn't walk much and strikes out way too much and goes through what seems like a huge slump every year. Very streaky player. Not worth that deal.

In baseball what does "not really worth that deal" mean? I mean, there is no cap, so whatever the owners are willing to pay is fine.

With how much the pitchers are getting paid, the deal looks alright to me. Extremely highly paid pitchers rarely work out, especially aging ones like Greinke. He probably has a 2 more goods years then becomes an albatross deal that has either fallen off in old age or is injured.
