So I'm cleaning out my closet and I run across my collection of basketball cards from when I was a kid. These are all upper deck cards from '92. I was into cards in '92 and pretty much never again. I bought the entire Upper Deck series from that year as well as several hundred cards from packs. The cards have been kept in cardboard trading-card boxes. They are in what I would describe as mint or near mint condition, but I'm not an expert. Not a soft corner in the bunch.

Any chance I have anything of value? I'm guessing even the premium cards in the set are only going to be worth a buck or two with most being a few cents. Anyone frequent any card shops in the valley? Is there such a thing these days?

Talked to a guy from House of Cards. Looks like I've got about $5 worth of cards on my hands.

They're worth more as fire starters than anything else. Early 90's cards were so mass produced that they're worthless. Children's hospitals won't even take them anymore because the kids don't want them.

lol

Doesn't your boy want them? I saved my 50,000+ card collection for my sons... My daughters don't want them, so I've been giving them to my nephews. They freaking LOVE them.

I traded a MJ rookie card for a Ken Griffy Jr. one when i was a boy in Orem.
BB cards were not as valuable as baseball then. That was a massive mistake.
It wasn't more than a few years later that it skyrockted. The sad thing is that later
I went to the kid that I traded with, and he lost it.

Ya, that's rough. That Upper Deck KGJR card is still one of a handful of valuable cards to come out of 1989 - 2001. I remember when I pulled it from a pack, oh joy, that was awesome. I'm a big fan of antique shops, flea markets, storage shed auctions, estate sales, etc. and will always go for the cards. I've spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars buying big lots of "unsearched" cards (ya right) only to find thousands of common crap. It is still fun, and I'm hopeful that I will stumble across a winner eventually.

I did come fairly close to a winner way back in the day though. I bought an abandoned moving crate and it had a box with nothing but old football cards. The gem of the box was a Walter Payton rookie card, which I still have, but unfortunately it is pretty hashed. I did sell about 30 O.J. Simpson cards that I got out of the box, and made a pretty penny on those. Amazing how much a few murders will raise your card value. Other cool cards from the box were an autographed Steve Young rookie, a Merlin Olson card (if you're from Utah, you know this dude did a lot of car commercials back in the day -- I didn't know he was a football player until I saw the card), a bunch of Gayle Sayers, Payton, Montana, Rice, Bradshaw, etc.

I'm still looking for the elusive Star Micheal Jordan rookie card though...

Anyone remember the Ripken 'bat' card with the writing on it? I don't want to give it away but looking back on it that was my favorite and still is.

I have a number of cards that were worth good money back then but the entire card market dropped years ago and now if they don't have part of their jersey or something on them they are not worth anything. Also with as many fake cards out there you never know what you are getting.

For example (At least this guy was forthcoming of not knowing if it was real)

No way a Jordan rookie in 'very good' condidition goes for this amount.

I think I'll just stick to collecting Garbage Pail Kids :)
