Ever think that was part of the reason they did this trade? By trading Deron, the Jazz save money this year and potentially the next two years (if Deron exercises his option year) when the salary cap is expected to go down and it will likely be harder (higher luxury tax?) to exceed the cap.

Also, hasn't the point been made on this forum that teams can't win in the NBA with a PG with a max contract?

Maybe. The situation was obviuosly pretty bad with Deron/Jerry. I think Jerry drew a line in the sand and Greg and KOC said "maybe." It appears they had explored trading Deron earlier. But nothing definite. Certainly not like Arroyo or Giricek when Sloan got 100% support from Larry.

I loved Larry's passion. But his heart sometime got in the way. AK should have been traded long ago. Now they'll get nothing for his expiring. Larry probably would have kept Deron around, only to see him probably walk away in 2012.

I've criticized Greg in the past, maybe moreso than anyone on this board. But I commend him and KOC for taking a HUGE gamble. Keeping Deron would have been the safe move. They parlayed his deal into essentially 4 first rounders. I think we really undervalue Devin Harris. He was a helluva good player in Dallas. Still an effective one in Jersey. But losing has to take it's toll. Utah still has more assets to work with than NJ. Let's see if this change will be positive for him.

For all you know, they might have a concept of franchise tag in NBA next year, like they do in NFL. And Deron is under contract for year and a half. There really was no urgency here at all. There was still time to actually try to get Deron help rather than destroying the team.

Most likely, but he's a troll with a schtick to beat (ex: they let Boozer walk). You're not getting meaningful conversation from 2814. Better to ignore and pay attention to sincere posters.

I think a lot of good points have been made. I believe that at the heart of the issue is poor management of the roster, team and finances. There were a lot of bonehead decisions made that lead up to this point.

AK huge contract and not trading it.
Letting Matthews, Korver and Boozer walk without using them as trade bait to improve team.

If the Jazz traded DW because they couldn't re-sign him why not trade Boozer and see what they could get. Maybe they still only get AJ but I doubt they would have had to give up 2 first rounders.

It is obvious that the front office didn't learn from letting Millsap test the market because they repeated the mistake and ended up losing Matthews. Then they turn around and extend Okur for really no reason.

The Okur move and Millsap contract made Boozer a goner so if the Jazz had already made it financially impossible why not trade Boozer or AK. Instead they hold onto AK and end up losing several key players on the team.

I find it funny how many posters including me complain about the roster moves and how management is screwing things up but when DW complained many crucified him. I think DW frustrations began with his rookie benching and with the imcompetence of the front office. So I really blame the front office for the state of the Jazz.

However, I am first and foremost a Jazz fan so I will still follow the team and I am interested in seeing the direction the team takes. My only concern is if it takes four years will the front office have integrity to pay all these young guys to keep them together or will the new additions pan out and bring a winner to Utah. I have been a fan for over 30 years now so I think I will stick around.

I think the owners will push for a franchise tag like the NFL. That will make keeping star players a lot easier for the owners, and make the players a lot of money.

Listening to Rigby on kfan yesterday, I understand where they are coming from. "If the NBA is going to shorter contracts then the best the Jazz can do is build through the draft and hope to get the most competitive team they can."

I think the Jazz still need to fill a need at SG. Hopefully, we get one in the draft or sign a free agent.
