Ben's take on ROY

I’d love to see Donovan get ROY. This back and forth has been fun with it.....the true robbery will be if Rudy doesn’t get DPOY. I love Donovan but if ROY doesn’t happen I’ll get over it. If DPOY doesn’t happen........
Agree. I think Rudy is pretty loyal, but would he consider leaving a la Hayward if he can't get the awards and recognition he deserves in Utah? If he wins DPOY, it would be pretty unusual to have him make an all-NBA team AND win DPOY, yet never have been an all-star.

I was mostly just teasing you.

No, I dont care about local connections playing overseas. But that is just me.

As far as a real fan goes I would actually just let a person define their own fandom and however you want to enjoy sports or have rooting interest go for it. Although most would say you are only a true fan if you stick to your team even if your "player" leaves.

I guess it was UtahJazzz that said he would be better than Lebron. But do you think he has a higher ceiling than Lebron or think he could get to that level? Either way you are far to high on him but you care about him on a personal level so that makes sense.

Nope I don't think he has LeBron's ceiling. Unless maybe he comes back next season shooting with his right hand and it actually doesn't look freaky.

Yeah you're right. If I didn't have any 'affiliation' with him (as flimsy as the affiliation is) I could make some objective points about his year:

1) He gets credited with a lot of assists where he basically just hands the ball of and sets a screen. Not my traditional understanding of a real assist. And he has had plenty of them.

2) A number of his assists are from guys who are told to catch and shoot in transition. In many cases there is a defender in their grill - and they nail the shots. So his assists are perhaps a tad inflated.

3) He does sit on the low block at times setting screens - but not looking to initiate or score.

4) He floats around on defense. There is probably a rhyme and reason to where he positions himself and who he guards - but I find it hard to decipher at times. I understand the switcheroo defensive schemes complicate this, but seriously how he left Belli on an island against LeBron is beyond me.

5) He gets a bunch of Westbrook rebounds (which you have noted) - but at least it makes sense because it puts him in the best position to succeed on offense.

6) He isn't a triple threat on offense - yet.

Btw, I'm assuming you guys saw the interview of Simmons after their game last night.
He was asked about the hoodie message from DM, and he said Donovan was endorsing him as a rookie, cause it was his (Simmons') first season 'playing'. He went onto say that it was all in good fun and that DM is a 'great player' who would have won ROTY if Simmons wasn't around. (He kind of mucked the ending up - but yeah).

I like it. Cool rivalry.

Actually, if you pay attention, Adidas realized that Donovan has the personality to do something like this and not come off like a douchebag. So he wore the hoodie for fun. To tweak Ben and get people talking. And it worked. A lot of people are talking about if redshirt rookies shouldn’t be dinged in rookie awards because of their inherent advantage of having been a professional for a full season.

The fact that there’s a true rookie putting up historic numbers should be worth more in the voting. Ben’s has a great year, but you can make the argument that what Donovan has done is equal or better. The fact that he didn’t get a free NBA season in between makes it more impressive.

And, like he has the entire year, he led his team to a decisive win over a quality opponent. The best part is that his interviews clearly indicate that he did it for fun and that he’s more concerned about team success. . . while ROY is probably going to be the big thing for Ben Simmons this year.

If Adidas sold that hoodie I would buy it right now.
