What's new

Big Al's new name should be Selfish Al

Big Al was in a zone in the third period. He single-handedly kept Utah in the game.

I have no problem with his performance.

He made some difficult shots tonight, but in the long run he'll miss them way more often than not. It's just encouraging a horrible style of offense.

Al played great last night and he moved the ball fine. Even when he posted he didn't slow things down as he has sometimes in the past.

He also missed plenty of easy shots in the first half. His shot is slightly off so far and he'll have plenty of stretches where these fall a lot. Ditto for Millsap.

You can argue that they're stagnant and that's why he's not passing but even when they're moving he won't pass and everyone's given up on hoping for a dish when he's working on the post.

he tries to look for a pass, but isn't savvy enough to really see the floor, so he goes for a shot instead of what would probably be a turnover.

They key with an "olajuwon" offense is Al being able to consistently recognize oncoming double-teams, and having the on-cort awareness to pass it to the most open teammate. He is getting better, but he is in no way shape or form an Olajuwon yet, in terms of passing.

Hopefully he'll learn how to pass out of double and triple teams because it gets super annoying to watch him heave up another when 3 people are wide open.

I wish he'd pass more, but hey, nobody else seemed to be moving at all.

Good job. All of you.

Let's stop for a minute with the no passing jungle chanting and actually discuss what's going on on the floor. First of all, Big Al reposted several times last night, just like all you have been asking for. Second, the Jazz don't flex right for Al to get passing opportunities. He has his back to a four man wall and Corbin keeps calling the low block plays for him. Teams are playing this old Jazz play very well as you'd expect, and the Jazz aren't reacting appropriately to counter.

They are learning though. In the first half Jazz executed one play to swing the ball to an open Hayward in the corner. It required Hayward to time his entry pass and run through, and for the other three players to make the appropriate adjustments at the correct times. Hayward missed the shot but the opportunity was there. Also, defense was scrambling to cover four shooters which resulted in an offensive rebound.

Another point to consider is AJ's excellent ability to take a double team from a smaller defender and still get a high quality shot off. He's incredible at faking out two guys at once and then getting that push shot off. He's a deadly weapon when it falls and extremely obnoxious when it doesn't.

Kept them in the game? They started the quarter up by 3 and as Big Slow went on a tear, they lost the lead. I don't know exactly how it happens, but when he gets great stats the team suffers overall.

When your starting wings shoot a combined 1 for 5 for the game and the opposing team starts off the second half on a 11-3 run, you score points any way you can.

And maybe we should be encouraging Bell and Hayward to get better rather than worrying about the master plan not working because Jefferson has a 12 point quarter.

Many here are congratulating Big Slow for a great game, especially the third quarter. Individually he did have a great quarter. Yet the Jazz lost the lead during the time he was scoring so much.

This seemed to be the pattern last year. When he went on a tear last year and had several 30 point games, the Jazz were getting killed. I don't claim to fully understand it but it seems true: when he gets great stats, the team does not do well. Too one dimensional, too slow, no passing, offense kiiler.

Did anyone hear Al Jefferson in the post game interview?

Oddly enough he sounded like he gets it. He talked about how he doesn't think the offense should be ran through him so much. And he knows the offense gets stagnant when it is going through him a lot.

So I don't get it. He even knows what the problem is with the offense is. So why is it still happening that way?

If Al Jefferson took less shots and learned the pick and roll scheme on offense and defense. Then he would be a welcomed commodity on this team. Maybe it will happen. He sounds like he is willing to move in that direction. But I don't understand why he is still throwing up a ton of shots. He is 2nd in the league in shot per game, per 48 min. That's not a good thing. Especially when we are trying to develop a young team.

I still say we should trade him because we have two young guys who are the future. Not sure I'm ready to believe he can play a team game.

Our starting wings, Hayward and Bell, got one shot total in the 3rd quarter why Big Slow was "destroying" the opposition while giving up the lead.

The problem with Al is that last night's third quarter is the best case scenario for him. His shot never takes him to the free throw line, so the Jazz never get easy defensive transitions or easy points with Al taking all the shots. He doesn't pass so you damn well better hope he makes his shot over multiple defenders. But this takes his teammates out of the game psychologically. Finally, the Jazz just lackadaisically run through their offensive sets and then pass Al the ball when he's out there. But if they don't just pass Al the ball he doesn't do much else out there. Not a great screener, doesn't play the pick and roll very well, and can't pass from the high post effectively.

The dude is a 6th man on a good team.

He was on fire. Why not continue taking the shots? Hm, If Kobe does it. Everybody will say yeah great performance. Al - selfish.
Everybody on the team understood that AL had the touch. So they just gave him the ball. That's it

The Jazz lost the lead because of Al Jefferson scoring? What?

So, instead of feeding the hot hand, you would have preferred Al to not putting up almost guaranteed buckets, and keep dishing it out to BELL on the perimeter??
