Big News Out of BYU??

Great move.

the only way they screw this up is if they really make a dump out of the schedule.

Otherwise, they'll earn much more money, will provide their fans some entertainment (hopefully their own broadcast will be in HD. I hated the Mountain), and will hopefully be a springboard to joining the Big 12. I don't see this changing the ease of getting into a BCS bowl game. I doubt that they'll give BYU a Notre Dame like exception. Nor should they. But I do think it helps BYU get into the Big 12, which is the next step.

Now that the Mountain West Conference has retaliated by inviting Nevada and Fresno State to join this is turning ugly. That would only leave 6 football teams in the WAC and yet 8 teams is required to be a football conference.

Wow. This whole situation has become even more bizarre. I may have to eat my words on the MWC dying a painful death. There reports out there that Fresno and Nevada have accepted invitations to the MWC. At the very least, they have been invited officially. https://www.themwc.com/genrel/081810aab.html

From what I've read, this might be the last ditch effort by the MWC to keep BYU in the conference and essentially kill the WAC. A WAC without Boise, Fresno, or Nevada isn't nearly as appealing to BYU, obviously. One of these conferences are going to leave this thing a lot stronger and the other is going to be left for dead. There's 2 ways this can play out IMO: The WAC survives and gains BYU (non-football) and Boise comes back. Or Fresno and Nevada join Boise and force BYU's hand to stay (and possibly negotiate their own exclusive TV deal) and the WAC is essentially dead. Of course, that's entirely speculation by me. This thing could change again by tonight. Either way, this gotten really complicated. Just look at Joe Schadd's (ESPN reporter) twitter page.

The MWC comes out guns blazing on the WAC inviting both Fresno and Nevada
The MWC believes those schools are coming and it could possibly affect BYU's thinking
The WAC thinks they may not leave since they'd have to pay $5M penalty each to leave
The WAC expects BYU is coming pending LDS Church approval
How much value does a MWC w/o Utah or BYU possess?
How much value does a WAC w/o Boise, Fresno or Nevada have?
It is fascinating to observe the missiles being fired between the MWC and WAC. In end, who wins?
With 10 teams, the MWC might just let BYU, which approached the WAC, walk away
Without BYU and Utah the MWC might have to reconfigure the Mtn deal and explore alternative options
Possible future WAC: NMST, Hawaii, SJSt, Idaho, Utah St, LaTech

It certainly looks as if Fresno (which would mean Nevada also presumably), is on it's way to the MWC.

Fresno State will announce this evening that it has accepted an invitation to join the Mountain West Conference, sources with knowledge of the situation told The Bee this afternoon.

Fresno State's decision is independent of whether BYU leaves the Mountain West Conference. A source said that BYU is considering playing football as an independent because the Mountain West would not commit to the school over the next five seasons, while also granting the school the right to leave at any time for better opportunities.

BYU certainly needs to avoid the WAC if they do go Independent for their basketball program's sake. That's just awful leftovers(Utah State is fine, but we obviously play them anyway). I wouldn't mind being in the WCC with the other religious schools. Although, I wouldn't be terribly against staying in the MWC either. I've been advocating Fresno and Nevada for awhile now - I just wish they would boot out some of the rubbish that is currently in the league as well.

It's like the little kid (WAC) upset at big brother bully (MWC) planned this elaborate scheme to get big brother's X-Box 360 and right before that plan is set in motion, big brother comes to little brother and shoots him in the head.

It's pretty much official, Fresno and Nevada are going to the MWC. Fresno has a press conference scheduled for 7:30 tonight. It's now a wait-and-see game with BYU to see what they what to do now. They hold the fate of UNLV and SDSU in their hands, essentially. I've read they'll follow BYU to the WAC if they go. Do they perhaps stay in the MWC for everything else but football? Or do they turn to the WCC?
