The Cavs find themselves in a unique situation where their first pick will have a direct impact on the quality of their pick at four. They're in a bit of a pickle with a draft that features a ledge after the fourth pick and a good possibility that taking Irving at 1 will force them to reach on their pick at 4. They are picking Kanter at 1 (i.e. reaching at 1) becuase, they don't want to reach at 4? And because they want to trade #4 for #2? Brilliant reasoning.

Would you rather have the 1st and 6th best prospects in the draft, or the 2nd and 4th? I guess it all depends on how much of a difference you see between 1 & 2 and 4 & 6.

Could this be reason they put Kanter to Cavs at #1?

Dont believe he declared for this year's draft. So main thing for him will be to play well enough to get on NBA scout's radar for next year.

He is also 220 pounds so he sounds as thin as Bol.

Everything that we have heard from people who actually have legit NBA connections is that there are only 2 people in play for #1: Kyrie Irving and Derrick Williams.

For what it's worth though, John Callipari did say to Brian T. Smith that if he were drafting #1 overall he would take Enes Kanter. Says something considering how much love and respect he has for another one of his guys, Brandon Knight.

Or they just think there is very little difference between Irving and Knight. You generally value bigs much higher. They'll still probably get one of the top-2 PG's. Only risk would be Irving goes #2 and then the JAzz take Knight, That would leave them with Kanter/Williams. That's not a bad scenario. Take Irving and then the draft could go (as expected) Williams #2 and Kanter #3, leaving Knight as the BPA at #4, but the Cavs would have already selected Irving.

So is Kanter/Williams or Kanter/Knight better than Irving/Vesely (or Valanciunas)? If I were the Cavs GM and Irving didn't completely blow me away in workouts, I might consider taking Kanter #1 (and I'm not a huge fan of Enes).

I think the consensus now is that Irving, Williams, Kanter and Knight are the 4 best players in the draft and after that there is a big drop off. What works in our favor is that the Cavs has Baron Davis under contract for 2 more years and the T-Wolves will have Rubio coming over this upcoming season. Baron Davis, when engaged, is still the team's best player and drafting Irving will leave them in the position where their top 2 players are both PGs. The T-Wolves can draft Irving and trade him, but the value they are going to get will be lower since their hands are tied with the whole world knowing they are drafting to trade. Also, who knows, maybe the team that eventually trades up is Washington, and they will never draft another PG and aim for Derrick Williams.

Anyway, as long as Irving doesn't go number 1, he will most likely end up with us at #3 (which I would love to happen). For those of you who are worried about his injury, he was checked out at the combine and everything checked out fine. NBAdraft.net said he had a broken foot but I think it was just a turf toe. That's really not how Smith explained it. The Cavs think it is a three person draft between Irving, Williams, and Kanter. They want to move up from 4 to 2 to make sure they don't have to reach at 4. If Jonas V drops out because of buyout complications, which there is a chance, then it really becomes a massive reach at 4 for them. Kemba, Knight, no use to them. It would likely be between Bismack and Vesely, both massive reaches most of us agree I think.

Can they move up to 2? I don't see how short of giving away next years pick unprotected. Consider this though, there aren't any bigs at all in next year's draft, they really need Kanter or at least JV or will be relying on garbage man Varejo for there only inside points for a very long time.....
