It would be really cool if the time/money/energy spent working on this stuff was spent on something like curing AIDS or cancer or something. Reminds me of the Seinfeld bit about the scientists who work their whole lives to develop the seedless watermelon.

That's a pretty ignorant statement. I know you are probably being sarcastic, but I can't let that one go. Do you realize how many people and how much money goes into cancer and AIDS research? Thousands and thousands of scientists and hundreds of millions of dollars go to researching these things. This group at CERN is specifically funded to research the chemistry and nuclear aspects of our world. You think these scientists have any idea how to research cancer and AIDS? Probably not. #agreewiththe-joker
