Haha. They actually make you put your beer in non-descript bottles and attach your entry form to each bottle with a rubber band. You drop it off a few days before the competition and then the day after the judging they announce winners at the Bayou.
Maybe I should see what it takes to be a judge? I know the BJCP certified beer judge program is more than I want to mess with at the moment, but not all judges at the Beehive Brew-Off are certified.

On a serious note though, Trout is saying specific things that I think about those beers also. Now, they were all good enough to drink, imho, but every beer has flaws or doesn't turn out exactly the way I want it to. I think it's good be my own toughest critic but when people taste my beer I want to know if they are tasting the same things I'm tasting. It's impossible with my wife. I'm like "taste it again, see if you can taste the buttered popcorn flavor" she says she can't yet to me it's overpowering. Most people just say that they like the beer or that it's pretty good. I appreciate that a lot and understand that until I started homebrewing and reading up on stuff related to it I didn't have the vocabulary to describe the various flavor components in beer in a way that would make sense to someone else.
That's what's awesome about beer competitions. For about $5 and a few of your beers you can have impartial judges, sometimes certified sometimes not, try your beer and give you very specific feedback. If you're just trying to make good beer then entering competitions is a very cheap way to get quality feedback, regardless if you think you have a chance to win or even care.
I changed the fermenting vessels I use. I really like these Spidel tanks that Morebeer.com sells. The prices have really gone up since I bought mine but these things are just too nice for brewing.
Some people feel strongly that glass is the best material for a fermentation vessel. They may have a few points in a few specific circumstances and maybe one day plasticisers from this tank will make me grow boobs (looks down, opps too late) but I hate using glass. First thing I hate about glass are the pics I've seen on homebrewtalk.com of people with their hands and calfs sliced open after they dropped a glass carboy or it just shattered in their hands. Some serious injuries out there. The second is that they are hard to lift and move and add a lot of their own weight. Second they allow UV light penetration, which is easy to manage but it's still a drawback. Third, cleaning. The narrow neck makes it hard to get in there and clean and especially to drain and get completely dry.

Not a bad idea bro.
I dont want to impose, but would you mind if I set up a little booth with some of my best stuff if poker night happens? I figure someone might think its kind of cool to end up going home with a crockpot in hand rather than just $15 in winnings.
