What's new

Brew Day!

What direction would you suggest for someone starting out? I would like to do some basic brewing. Mostly I want to something thats relatively inexpensive and easy but I can still try new stuff and have some fun making different kinds of beers and flavors.
I'd head down to the salt city brew supply shop and ask them about their starter being kits. They're pretty good and generally give good advice.

Making a recipe kit is pretty straight forward. Now is a great time to get into it because you can probably find a room in your house that will stay in the low sixties.

I'd pass on the glass carboy they might try to upset you and if you do buy a recipe kit post the instructions. I've never seen the ones in their kits but sometimes they lead you the wrong way.

Thanks, Ill look into that!

So you're literally building your own? I assumed it was a purchase a package kind of thing.

There are plans at www.theelectricbrewery.com but I'm deviating from those plans in a few ways. Yeah, pretty much just using their plans as a guide.

This is what their design looks like.

I have panel tags on order.

Here it is with tags for what each switch does.

Also, those are illuminated push button switches. Here's a pic of them lit up.

On mine Main Power is blue, element and pump power is green and the alarm on/off buttons are red (and they're a bit smaller than the power buttons).

I really wanted to wait until my panel tags got here but they're taking too long. Here's a little more progress.\

Major wiring work to be done tomorrow. Guess panel tags will show up next week. Getting my 20G kettle on Wednesday, a new blichmann.

This is a 15G kettle but the best pic I could find. I'll be doing some major reconstructive surgery to my new kettle so wish her well.

have you made any oatmeal flavors before bro? love those.

I have put oatmeal in a porter before, probably about three years ago.

Oatmeal provides a very full body, a lot of mouthfeel, in particular a slickness on the tongue. You could say "oatmeal flavor" I guess, but it's usually used for it's other qualities more than flavor, although it does have a flavor.
