What's new

Burks at #12

I think most are very impressed with his overall stats (minus three point shooting), abilities, measureables, style (very smooth), etc.

My question marks then become.
1) How is he without the ball?
2) How's his basketball iq?
3) How's his character and moreso, leadership?

All legit questions. There's always a chance he comes in and becomes another Snyder, who wanted to be an instant star, or an Almond, who only wanted to shoot. I think it must be hard to transition from a star in HS and the main guy on your college team to perhaps the 3rd or 4th option, or even a bench player in the NBA. Burks certainly has a lot of self-confidence. Let's hope that serves him well vs. creating conflicts. I'd like to see him develop into a 6th man. I still like Hayward more as a SG, and don't like Hayward moving to SF to allow Burks to start, except against small lineups. Burks could become a player like Maggette. He still gets 30+ mins, but you have a bigger SF who plays 6-7 mins to start each half. Then as the starters go out, Burks would become one of the main options.

Screw 6th man. I want him to become a go-to guy.

What i hope is, Hayward becomes the leader of this new team. Both due to his age comparing to burks, kanter and favors and his character. Kanter has a very good personality and work ethic but i dont think he can be the leader of the team. Neither do burks and favors.

Burks can become a starter if he works hard but that will push Hayward to SF which i dont really prefer him at. Instead i would like to see Burks rather as a best 6th man in the league instead of a decent starter.
Like terry in dallas or odom in la. Even ginobili accepted that role last year or the year before. Players with character doesnt cry if they dont get what they want, they just work hard and let their game speak instead.

why is Hayward better at SG. Isn't he 6-8?

seems to me that the Jazz are very tall at the 2 and 3 with hayward, Miles, Ak, and Burk, and getting taller at the 4 and 5 too.
If Burk really can play PG, that could be interesting also.

I'm not sure that having a super tall team is a good thing, but with Hayward, Favors, Kanter, and Burk all on board, it will be interesting to see all these players compete for playing time.

The thing is, what i have seen so far in the last year, Hayward has a pretty good advantage at 2 and he uses this well. He gave even kobe hard time in both ends. But at 3, he will have more difficulty defending players like lebron, carmelo, durant ...
Unless Burks turns out to be a very very good player, we better play hayward at 2 and get a good complementary piece at SF.

Again, isn't Hayward about the same size as Carmelo and Lebron? We could put Favors or AK on Durant if that is better, but you don't dictate your entire lineup to match up against one player on one team.

not same size as lebron for sure. And its not only about one player on one team, i can count many other players, his defense is not bad, but unless we have wade, joe johnson or kobe at 2, we will have more advantage to play hayward at 2 and a decent guy at 3 instead of hayward at 3 and a decent guy at 2. its my opinion

It's interesting to debate line ups and say who should be the SG or who should be the SF. In the case of Hayward and Burks, I don't think it will matter so much. Both are versatile. I think, until Burks fills out his frame a little more and gets from his 193 to about the 205-215lbs range, he'll be better off guarding the 2 because he'll get pushed around by Kobe and Shawn Marion and those types, the 3's that are in the 220's. Hayward came into the league at 211, so he's a little bigger to be able to guard those guys.

Yeah, not to mention that according to Hayward himself he has gained 20 lbs of muscle this off-season. Sounds like he is preparing himself to be a 3.

Lebron is listed at 6-8, same as Hayward.
Lebron is heavier , but that is to be expected, because Hayward is much younger.

Kobe is listed at 6-6.
Wade at 6-4.
Burk at 6-6.

To me, 6-8 suggest a forward position.

If Hayward can guard SGs, great. If so, I'd like to see him learn to post his man up right under the basket.

Kobe is probably closer to 6'8" in shoes. He looked pretty close to the same height as Hayward during that game where Gordon kicked his arse.

I think it makes sense to think that if Hayward and Burks are going to be on the court at the same time, Burks will guard the opposing teams SG and Hayward will guard the SF. If either is out there with Andrei (if he comes back) or Millsap (if he attempts to move to SF) then either would be the SG in that line up. At this point we don't know what kind of defensive player Burks will be. It may be that he's somewhat of a liability in technique or effort, at which point they may decide matchup's based on ability more so than size. It'll be interesting to see what Alec brings to the table. Hopefully he'll emerge as at least a decent defensive player.
