Burks Not Being Used Properly

Alec obviously is still not completely back. His timing and rhythm are off. However, one of the problems with his less than stellar play so far is that he is not being used properly.

He is the most athletic player on the team, and what is he doing when Hill and Hayward are in the game with him -- standing in the bleeping corner! Alec needs to be out front and making the opponents defense work to contain him. They need to set more picks for him. Usually when he's out front, it's just him one-on-one. Sure, he can beat his man without a pick but the one-on-one ISOs just stagnate everything and allow the defense to be in better position for rebounds. JJ is a little different because he can just bull his way into the paint and overpower most of the players who guard him. But for the most part, the benefit of ISOs is when a team is tired or there is a huge mismatch.

Good lord, just stop. Why do people expect Quin to completely change the offense (mid-season too) for dudes like Exum and Burks? The offense is geared toward our best players, not our OK bench players. Yes, in the Jazz offense sometimes you have to stand in the corner because the corner spaces the court amazingly and is an amazing shot.

And Burks hates picks, the dude rejects picks more than 90% of the league. It's not like he relishes the opportunity to use one. Burks isnt a good ISO player, IDK why anyone thinks that. He isn't a good finisher either. He makes some cool fancy plays, but jackknife 360 layups are worth the same amount as just regular layups. His strength for us right now is transition. He has to learn to find good shots in the offense (and to actually make them). It's not an impossible task.

And you havent even really said how you want him used. Run PNR? Yes, he does that now, just like every player does in our offense. Pretty sure we run more screens than nearly every team in the league.

This. His shooting percentage within 3 feet was never good, the last two years it was bad, this year it is pathetic.

Two season's ago, he shot 51% within three feet of the basket. Our only regular players who were worse: Burke and Millsap.

Last season, he shot 57% within two feet. The only Jazzmen worse from this range: Burke, Millsap, and Pleiss.

This season, he is shooting a stellar 46% within 3 feet. Nobody on the team is worse than that. Nobody else is even close to being that bad. Even the much-maligned Exum, who has (rightly) been crucified by Jazzfanz for some of his awfully awkward lay-up attempts this season, shoots 57% within three feet (and even that's not good). But Burks "looks" better when he misses, and makes the occasional "Houdini!" shot, so fans over-rate his ability to make lay-ups.

What Burks is doing better this year is shooting beyond 3 feet, so overall his shooting percentage is up. He is also getting blocked less. He appears to be pulling up and shooting on his drives, rather than continuing into the crowd waiting for him under the basket, which is what he used to do. Credit to him for playing a bit smarter (or to Quin for utilising him better). His "less than stellar play" is actually better than the last two years.

Granted AB is not playing well this year, but I think you all seriously underrate him. I don't think he's ever been utilized well. He has more athletic ability than anyone on the team and that should be tapped. Yes, he is much better in transition and doesn't have the playmaking ability of say Ingles. Is that something he can't develop, or is it simply something that he just doesn't have a feel for and never will be able to develop?

He had about a year off with no preseason and is only 21 games back. He'll get better.

You're right. For me it makes absolutely no sense to play Burks and Diaw at the same time and yet this seems to be the situation where Burks gets most of his minutes. Why have both Exum and Burks playing at a fast pace and counter that with Diaw and his fat ***. People seem to be of the mindset that we can only have one playing style but with depth and experience of this Jazz roster we can play a number of different ways depending on match ups. Players like Exum and Burks allow us to play at a fast pace, Diaw and Favors (at the four) allow us to play a slow pace, but we don't need to play one or the other, we can play both at different stages throughout games and become a much better team for it. Which Quin needs to do a far better job of putting line ups on the floor that will suit one another and as such get the most out of players on the court.

Yes please.

Whenever our offense gets stagnant (which can be too often at times) I'd love to see Quin play Dante and Alec and push the tempo.

Why would we put an average ISO player intentionally in ISO's? Burks is at best a complimentary piece, he's a bit of a bad fit with our lineup. And still plays hero ball just a little too often, yet you want him used like that even more? When Hood is back I hope Burks sees far less playing time, because right now he's just not very good. And it's not because he is being misused, It's because he does not fit very well and is still finding his rhythm a bit.

Sadly this is true, Burks came into the league with great finisher potential - unfortunately he hasn't gotten one bit better at it.

The good news is the value is pretty high for Burks. I like him and am fine with him staying but if DL can get major value for him it's worth considering. Plus moving Burks would likely result in us being able to sign the 'alcoholic electrician'.

Why do some people say Burks is the most athletic player on the team? He's much closer to being the most 'naturally athletic' player on the team, but that's still debatable with bigs like Gobert, Favs, and a unique project like Dante

Burks seems like he has a lot of wasted movement that slows him down.
