BYU to the Big 12 discussion???

Anybody care for some last minute conference/independence smack before BYU joins the best current football conference in America?

Anybody care for some last minute conference/independence smack before BYU joins the best current football conference in America outside of the SEC?
Fixed.

But if BYU can join, there is absolutely NO good reason to not accept for fear of embarrassment (I'm not saying that's the case, there just isn't a good reason).

What's the latest on this? I haven't heard anything for a while.

According to supposed insiders, it's just down to BYU and Fox working out TV replay rights now. So there doesn't appear to be any issues with the Big 12 itself.

Personally, I'm just going off solely how these Big 12 people are talking publicly right now as far as a timeline is concerned though. It's sort of easy to tell what they are really saying after you watch politicians and business leaders comments closely for a few years even if they appear to be saying nothing. Same PR tricks. But like I mentioned in that other topic, the one thing you could always bank on was that BYU was in barring the Big 12 falling apart and it isn't.

Best? Going a little overboard aren't we? I said this would happen if the BIG12 stayed together. Their 1st choice was Pitt who left to the ACC and then it was BYU. Good for BYU.

Man, sometimes you make it so easy. Hasn't the SEC won the last 5 or 6 BCS Championships? But hey, BYU's only hope of ever joining a big boy conference is the Big 12 so I'm not suprised that they're "the best" in your eyes. And whether you'll admit it or not, losing Nebraska and Texas A&M and replacing them with the likes of BYU only makes that conference weaker.

It definitely is a weaker conference. But at least they will get their shot now. Good for them. I have no ill will towards BYU when they aren't play Utah.

BYU should feel lucky they're getting bailed out of their independence experiment, which seems to ultimately be a ballzy, yet stupid, move on their part.

I'm a U fan, but I want both programs to succeed for the good of the state. If only Weber St. could get something going somehow......

Conference title in '08. Playoffs (yes, playoffs, we play where you win your championships on the field) in two of the last three years. 2-0 in conference. Beat down the team that beat Oregon State. Lost to Wyoming on a touchdown with 22 seconds left (were up four).

They have a good basketball team every once in awhile.

The Big Sky has been in existence since 1964. In 47 years of Big Sky play, Weber State has won the regular season basketball title 20 times.

EDIT: via Wikipedia.

Weber State's Men's basketball team (852-495), long hailed as a powerhouse in the Big Sky Conference, acquired new head coach Randy Rahe for the 2006-2007 season. WSU Men's basketball team has the 24th highest winning percentage in NCAA Division I history. In 2005, Street and Smith magazine complied a list of the greatest basketball programs in college basketball history, WSU made #51. The Men's basketball team won its 18th overall Big Sky Conference championship in 2009. WSU's Men's basketball is also famous for 1st Rd NCAA Tournament upsets. In 1995 Weber beat #3 seed Michigan State, in '99 WSU beat #3 seed North Carolina.

A lot of those team I imagine were under Ron Abegglen. He was a very underrated coach.

He was the head coach for three of the twenty, so 15%. He also is responsible for the school losing scholarships and suffering sanctions.

Dick Motta and Phil Johnson, who I believe 99.9% of the population would say are better coaches, are responsible for most of the titles.

Weber State has won the regular season title 2 of the last 3 years, and 4 of the last 9.

Don't forget pushing his wife down a flight of stairs... That point aside, he never had a losing season in his career. Or at least I don't think he did. He was a good coach.

His successor had one losing season in his six or so years at the helm. He was fired afterwards. We expect to win at Weber State. Randy Rahe has yet to post a losing season.

Incidentally, I see Ron Abegglan at football games fairly regularly. When I first saw him around three years ago, it looked like he had aged about 40 years since he last coached.
