(CNN)Pope Francis delivered a fiery denunciation of modern capitalism on Thursday night, calling the "unfettered pursuit of money" the "dung of the devil" and accusing world leaders of "cowardice" for refusing to defend the earth from exploitation.
Speaking to grassroots organizers in Bolivia, the Pope urged the poor and disenfranchised to rise up against "new colonialism," including corporations, loan agencies, free trade treaties, austerity measures, and "the monopolizing of the communications media."

Time for Catholics to rebel against capitalism.

Nothing could kill Christianity faster than an attempt by Christian leaders to destroy the progress and the quality of life capitalism has provided to humanity. I say condemn, condemn, condemn.

Continue teaching us that our joy, our desire, our love is evil. Keep teaching us that our natural state of being is a sin. The louder, the stronger the condemnation the faster we will wake up and realize that faith is the problem. That lies and fantasy is not a suitable solution to humanities problems.

Bring it on Pope!

he rants about wealth redistribution while he sits on billions of dollars in art and other monetary items.
not to mention the money the vatican has

he probably has sex with lil boys!

so yeah i think he should be burned at the stake next to obeezy

edit i know the sick hammer crucifix was a present and depending on what u believe the pope might think it is wrong

he probably has sex with lil boys!

Sweet. You might have something in common!

Anyways, yes, this is much further than he should be throwing. Probably a bad move to try throwing down in force like this. Even I see the benefit in hard work resulting in hard rewards. Name calling isn't going to do anything positive for anybody.

Well, he sounds an awful lot like Jesus of Nazareth back in his day.

No disagreement. Hopefully he sounds more and more like him and people look at what he's saying, look around the world they live in and conclude that it's all a bunch of nonsense.

Well when Jesus said it, he helped usurp an entire established empire-- and we are talking Jesus the actual historical figure who lived ;)

I only watch conspiracy theory videos about real issues. Like Jewish lizard people controlling our minds with chemtrails.

Haven't seen that one yet. Those damn Jews.

But no seriously. Christians were the ones who invented modern capitalism anyway. And he said "unbridled" capitalism, which is the usual message about moderation you'd expect from a religious leader. I actually really like this pope.

Same. People complaining about nothing. I think people realized the inhumanity of unbridled capitalism like 200 years ago. Count on ****ing CNN to conflate modern and unbridled capitalism.

I'd be interested to see the bridle, and who has their hands on the reigns...and how much money finds its way to them to pull the reigns this way or that.

I assume it would remain the way it is now. People and their governments bridle capitalism, the same way they do now. Even the most capitalist country on Earth, the United States, actively monitors and manipulates the market. I read a lot of economics books, all by capitalist academics, and I haven't come across anyone who thinks we would do be better off with zero regulation. I'm talking about academics from serious institutions, not Ayn Rand.

Oh, so the Pope is talking about something that doesn't exist and has never existed...and I mean unbridled capitalism, not God.

The pope is talking about perspective. He views unlimited accumulation of wealth for its own sake to be an immoral way to live. Instead, one should look to help out others with that wealth. The same can be extended to societies or countries. Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with what he's saying, it is as mundane a statement as it gets. It is a sentiment as old as dust. Capitalism is here to stay. Stop worrying about it.

I'm not worried about it.

Several times over the course of multiple discussions you have assumed to know what I think and what my motivations are. I have a lot of respect for you. Please stop assuming you know what I think based on some sort of stereotype you've associated me with.

It is literally impossible to have a conversation with someone without making projections about their perspectives from the information they've provided.

"I'd be interested to see the bridle, and who has their hands on the reigns...and how much money finds its way to them to pull the reigns this way or that."

That means you view the pope's statement as a threat to capitalism, right? Am I making too big a leap here? Is the use of the word "worried" what bothers you? I am baffled. It's like me being upset because someone "assumes" I don't believe in Lord Rama just because I publicly stated I'm an atheist. Not that I'm making the assumption that you're upset!

I appreciate that you have respect for me, and I feel the same about you. I consequently would prefer not to offend you with any false stereotyping or generalizing. But this purpose would be better served if you correct any erroneous assumptions on my part, so that I can self correct. Your response as it stands doesn't help, because it is impossible to comply with. I cannot know your thoughts about every single subject, nor do I memorize every view you explicitly stated.

he sits on wealth! and keeps it for his small inner circle.

we should ignore his ramblings. untill he starts giving away his health to the poor!

untill them **** him and ignore him

Alright, you got me riled up with the Ayn Rand jab. After that I might have reacted a little over sensitively.

But I think the question about who's holding the reigns in the Pope's vision of capitalism is valid. Especially since he is referencing the nonexistent boogeyman of unbridled capitalism. Maybe he just doesn't like who's holding the reigns at the moment?

But I think capitalism is more of a threat to the Pope than the Pope is to capitalism, that is, if the Pope legitimately wanted to attack it. That's essentially what I was saying in my OP.

FYI, I'm not a worshiper of Ayn Rand. She has no qualifications as an economist or as a philosopher. She also had the gall to name her "philosophy" Objectivism, while she freely modified it to justify her own failings.

I'm also not advocating for some anarchist version of capitalism.

But I do find it humorous that the Pope would speak out against it, especially since it is typically right-wing religious conservatives that typically freak out about supposed socialists and communists in our midsts.
