Cavs, Magic, Jazz Trade Idea

Orlando is aggressively shopping Fournier and Herzonja. Cleveland needs change and is on record trying to dump Shumpert. We have more questions than answers on Favors, Burks and Joe Johnson. Here we go:

Cavs get Favors and JoeJ
Magic get Shumpert, Burks and Cleveland's 2018 1st
Jazz get Fournier, Herzonja, Frye and Calderon

Bear with me...

Why for Cavs: they are hurting right now and need a roster improvement to make what could be the final run with LBJ. Favors and Joe are major roster improvements over Shumpert and Frye. Sure, they sacrifice a little for the future here by losing their late 1st, but their front office desperately wants to contend for a title and shed Shumpert's salary for next year.

Why for Orlando: they are aggressively shopping Fournier and Herzonja. Sure, Burks plus Shumpert makes a little more in 2018-19 what Fournier makes, but the savings for 2019-20 and beyond makes it worth it to the new management in Orlando. It's a clean slate 2 years earlier and they pick up a 1st rounder. And if they get lucky, maybe Shumpert declines his player option. Also, this trade assures the Magic of a top 5 pick.

Why for us: All the vultures have been circling for weeks, and we need for something to happen. We like to think we could be free agency players in 2018 or 2019, but there is no guarantee we can get a guy as good as Fournier and/or Herzonja. We can debate our guys all we want, but Joe, Favors and Burks are or should be gone. Fournier comes with a little bit of risk due to his contract, but having Gobert on his team should keep both guys motivated.

This trade involves a number of players, but every one has been thrown out there in trade discussions since 2018 started.

With all of that explanation and reasoning, you worry about Calderon? He's a $1.5 million expiring who probably gets waived by us...
You know he might be a better PG for us than Rubio because he would be less ball dominant, knows how to run an offense, and is a better shooter. Might be better to replace Rubio with him, not that he's a long-term solution by any means but for the moment, this year.
