Charlottesville

I may not agree with antifa's tactics all the time, but it's one hell of a false equivalency to say that they are also to blame for what happened this weekend.

When the streets of america start resembling those of 1930s Germany we're well past the point of laying blame on "both sides." Especially when our president makes clear which side he is on.

A false equivalency would be me saying the views of ANTFIFA are as bad as the views of the White Supremacist and they should be viewed as two sides of the same coin. I have said no such thing. The White Supremacist are 100% to blame for having ****ty views on society and race.

I'm talking about the response to them though and how it is being handled incorrectly (IMO), which lends itself to more violence. ANTFIFA is a part of that problem.

Anyone is welcome to a different opinion, but I don't believe in violence as a vehicle to change an idea people have. I think if anything it helps grow it and make it become more radical. Having that opinion doesn't me sympathetic to their movement.

As far as protest/counter protest go, it's a 1st Amendment right to free speech. It's a 2nd amendment right to bare arms, and a lot of states have open carry being legal, even for automatic weapons. It's some really ****ed up **** that leads to these events being even higher tension than they would be otherwise and I think it would be wise to outlaw weapons of any kind for protest(maybe besides bear mace because the videos of the Alt-Right getting maced where pretty funny).

We have a president that gives cover to the worst of those that gathered at Charlottesville: the Klan, neo-nazis, neo-confederates, and white supremacists. For the somewhat less extreme, white nationalists and the alt-right, he provides jobs in the White House as his advisors. This is America under Trump. It’s shameful. Those that make excuses for him may as well be collaborators.

This was always America. Trump didnt create these people (there have always been hate speech rallies, they were just behind hoods), he just gave them confidence. I think largely that confidence is back-firing on them as a lot of people have been exposed who otherwise wouldn't be. Yes Trump is being a complete bitch about calling them out, but a good majority of the world is doing the opposite.

In the past year we have started to see some Confederate monuments fall, and I think that is going to continue. So while Trump's presidency has certainly been ****ty, we can take positives that maybe bringing the **** to the surface will force us to deal with these things instead of just sweeping them under the rug like we have been doing.

That's fair. It just seems to me that, considering what transpired with the girl getting killed and our president's tepid denunciation of and then defense for those responsible, all bringing up antifa does is muddy the waters.

He didn't just give them confidence. He gave some of them jobs with considerable influence and power. He gave them support today by going after whatever the "alt-left" is and by defending them in terms unmatched by anyone other than themselves.

And honestly I think we need to recognize this collection of racists who call themselves the alt right as a something new and dangerous. Back in the day they used to have the sense to wear hoods, now they march openly. They used to have to rely on dogwhistles from politicians, now they are openly defended in the White House.

And when they march, they have what essentially amounts to a mercenary army with them.

they started violent for months. now the right is retaliating.

the media did not report on it as widely because they are complicit!

If you believe systematic racism is a problem in the country, then you must believe racist have held jobs in high power in many positions prior to Trump being elected. Trump is 100% contributing to the problem further, but the positive still remains that it has become more transparent and easier to prove and debate.

Their rallies are highly publicized man, you can go do it if you really wanted to.

I meant it tongue-in-cheek.

I think violence has its role, as does peaceful dialogue. I think focusing simply on one or the other is setting yourself up for failure. You want to be able to not get steam-rolled, while providing a message for the future that captivates enough people

Punk bands and fans did that themselves as Nazis became attracted to the punk scene for it's aggressive nature to come to shows and purposefully injure people. They kept Nazis out of their shows. Nazi had to have their own shows at their owns venues.
