Charlottesville

Dangerous times when supporters of the 2nd amendment are lumped in with supporters of a highly unconstitutional president.
Just an FYI, you can support the second amendment and still believe that we need stricter gun laws.

One of the most annoying things about conversations about guns is the stance that only people who believe in unfettered access to guns truly support the 2nd amendment.

The people marching in Virginia support a very particular interpretation of the second amendment, one that isn't shared by the majority of the country.

Hasn't it been extremely obvious from the very start that Trumpism is a politics of fear? A political movement dependent on playing on fears? Is it so hard to fathom that this is exactly what cynical(I can manipulate your fear without you realizing I am using you) demagogues do to attain and retain power? What has Trump done other then play on fears and encourage hatred of anyone, that's anyone, who disagrees with him, to any degree whatsoever? He did not begin our polarization, but he has clearly increased it by taking the most non-presidential position when we least need such a position: "I am a president for my base, and only my base. All other Americans can leave the country if they don't like it". He never said that, but he doesn't need to. Just try to prove that paraphrase is not exactly how he has chosen to govern. Govern through the politics of fear and exclusion. Why do we need such crap? How the hell is this helping our country?

RICHMOND — Y'all, it smelled like fear out here in Virginia.

Scores of men — plus a handful of women — dressed up in battle rattle and draped themselves with assault weapons, long guns and handguns on Monday. They strapped hunting knives to their thighs and wore body armor and body cameras on their chests, shoulders and helmets.

To a rally. A peaceful rally. On city streets in a quiet state capital on a holiday weekend.

That’s a uniform of fear, right there.

Fear of having to pass a background check if they want to buy a gun from a private individual?

Fear of not being able to buy more than one handgun every month?

Fear of not being able to carry an AR-15 across your chest to a county fair that doesn’t want your weapon aboard the Tilt-a-Whirl?

Fear of getting help taking a gun away from your suicidal son?

Because those are all the restrictions on guns that the Virginia House of Delegates passed last week.

Imagine the organizers of a county fair in Virginia objecting to folks attending dressed like this. Poor guy is having a basic right taken away.

Again it’s a legit protest (in fear of Virginia going down the road of forcible confiscation) stained by the many clowns that can be seen in the footage, who associate supporting the 2nd amendment with supporting Trump.

It's a nonsense fear, might as well be a fear of the boogeyman.

People like this walk around all gunned out to intimidate. They could have gotten their message across in a much more adult way with petitions, posters and simply peacefully protesting. They act like this and then they wonder why most people think they are nuts and deplorable. I am all for people being able to own a gun or guns to hunt, shoot at a rifle range or for protection in their home but an AR-15 is a military type weapon used for mass carnage and a favorite of mass shootings. The 2nd amendment has been taken hostage and misinterpreted as to support a dangerous ideology used by the corrupt NRA and right-winged fear-mongers preparing for the end of times. Now it is time for the responsibly gun owners to stand up and keep their guns but be open to legislation to help public safety. It is time to have a reasonable conversation and not a time for more fear-monger when the discussion comes up. Having no regulations is not smart or possible if you want safety. Nor is taking away 300 million guns from everyone. They're needs to be more compromise and less intimidation.

Seems like these laws ENCOURAGE ramming vehicles into people? Why are Republicans passing these laws and what are their consequences?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the white supremacist who killed Heather Heyer with his car claim he “was scared?” So under these types of laws, he’d be a free man right now? Why the hell are we doing this?

As usual, worded out of context. Why didn't you include this:

House Bill 1674 also states that drivers cannot be held criminally or civilly liable for killing or injuring a protestor if they are "fleeing from a riot," and there is "reasonable belief" that they are in danger. Both must be true to be given immunity.

So if people are throwing bricks and molotovs at your car, yes, you should be allowed to protect your family and make an attempt to get out of dodge. I predict there will be zero rammings.

Zero minus the one that already happened?
