Coaches salaries and potential impact on small market teams

I used to be on the brad jones bandwagon, but not now. Jazz can't afford to wait and see if he works out. They need to win fans back with the next coach hire, and that starts with winning the press conference that announces the new hire, and Brad Jones doesn't do that. Nobody gets excited for that.

I also think they need a character, a personality, someone with charisma. Frank Layden was a character, and Jerry Sloan was quotable, plus people tuned in to games to see if he was going to go postal on the refs or one of his players. SVG wins the press conference, gets the jazz credibility nationally and makes great sound bites for the radio or nightly news....and he wins.

My opinion: Winning games will win fans back. A charismatic coach will not. Number of people who came to games to see Sloan go postal: Zero.

DL wants to win. Period. He could care less about hiring a coach with gravitas.

To answer Green's negative rep: stupid, terrible points tend to draw that part out of me and many others in their lesser moments.

Hopefully I don't sound like I'm talking out of both sides of my mouth, but I agree with core4 that the Jazz could do worse than brad Jones and he seems like a logical fit. He is going to be a head coach somewhere.....

But if the jazz go with him they are going to have to sell it, Mention brad jones here and many people say who? This despite C4 and others talking about jones since he was hired last summer. The jazz are going to have to make a big deal about a search and interview process and then announce their criteria, and really hype jones.

In response to your original post, getting a charismatic coach, who can win over the fans an media.... Winning press conferences are how the Knicks got where they are.... No thanks!

A coach with charisma, gravitas, charm, etc. is an absolute necessity for the college game (recruiting, dealing w/ boosters, soliciting donations, etc) but an NBA coach just needs to be able to win...that's all that matters. I wouldn't mind a coach with a stone-like personality, you know, someone like Jerry Sloan or Greg Popovich...

Utah can't afford to make a mistake this offseason with its head coach. If they bring Corbin back, which the thought gives me nightmares, I don't expect things to get any better. The Jazz made a huge mistake giving Corbin a 4 year deal after he coached just 28 games. I was upset about the decision from the get go. If they mess this up all this 'talent', cap space and assests we've acquired will be for nothing.
