This is a really stupid question, but why aren't all play-in games between 16 seeds instead of 2 games being to earn a #16 seed and two to earn a #11?

Because the automatic bids of some of the small conference teams are worse than the at-large bubble teams. So some of those play as 11's.

Kind of makes sense. But I guess that is arguing there will always be 10 teams worse than the four teams vying for an 11th seed (#12-16 seeds in two regions). I could see MAYBE reserving 2-4 spots for teams that get in through a major tournament upset.

It's anything but an exact science. Having said that, 300 plus teams begin the season knowing the rules. If they don't want to be in that situation, they need not allow themselves to be.

Well BYU got in...Sort of.
I think it's obvious they were not in until they beat Gonzaga. Would not have even made 1st 4 out without that win.

BYU got a pretty decent draw. They are favored by Vegas in the play-in game and the ESPN picker has them beating Xavier. Better than snagging the 9 seed, I guess.

My thoughts exactly. I would rather play Xavier than OleMiss. So a pretty decent draw.

I'm just glad that UK, Utah, BYU, Zags, and Iowa State made it in. Way more discussion round here.

Baylor/Arizona/VCU being in the potential path were they to make a deeper run doesn't seem so bad either. Plus, that bracket goes to Los Angeles for the sweet 16. Easy travel spot/a lot of BYU fans in SoCal. That would be a good situation.

Baylor is underrated. VCU is gross.
Arizona will get knocked off in an upset, for sure.

ESPN dudes seem to really like the Zags. Are they really that good? I mean, they play Pangos and Wiltjer and could potentially be facing a Hoiberg coached team in the sweet 16. How will they not give up 120 points?

See one of my very first posts in this thread. Every year, the zags get ranked high, every year they do a nice job beating awful teams, every year they are a media darling, every year they flame out early against actual competition, every year their fans say THiS year is different. Gag me with a spoon. <----- used to illustrate how long it's been since they were almost relevant.
