Not totally true. I was 17 and 364 days old when my parents got it. You're right though, I've never appreciated it.

Well, my attitude is from experience. I knew way too many kids when I was a scout, and as my kids have been scouts, who skated through, being handed merit badges (literally being told at the camp "well, you were here, here is a merit badge") and then watching their mom and dad do their project for them. I lost a lot of respect for the program due to this and several terrible leaders. I know there are a few out there who earned it themselves, but I believe they are few and far between.

Also, when did they change it so a 12 year old can get it? I remember when I was in scouting there was a time requirement between ranks and it took a min of something like 2 years. Kind of like school, we don't want anyone to feel threatened or "challenged" so we better give them all badges and A's so they feel good about themselves. Screw preparing anyone to live in the real world.

In hindsight, I wish I would have gotten mine. I advanced to Life but found that working, girls & football were more important. That said, I was never handed a merit badge. 4 of the hardest ones I ever earned were the three Citizenship badges and the Wilderness Survival badge. The Citizenship badges mostly because there was more work required than most of my school classes and the Survival badge because I spent a week in the High Uintas with no food other than what I could collect, hunt or scavenge. You'd be amazed what you'll stuff in your pie-hole after 72 hours with nothing but yarrow tea and wild potatoes in your belly. If I ever found myself crashed in the Andes with a soccer team please just bash my head in and eat me.

If I were in the Uintas I'd probably cheat by trapping and collecting 13" trout by hand in the shallow streams. That kind of defeats the purpose though.

When I was 12 my troop lost a kid in the Uintas for too many hours. I suggested he had most likely passed the trail down into camp after our daily hike because it wasn't an obvious turn and a very easy mistake to make. Being the grand outdoors men the leaders thought they were, they quickly brushed this off and followed their primitive instincts to bush whack in the dark for miles up the trail and down various turn offs.

Us scouts sat in camp around the fire for a few hours worrying and speculating. The one leader left behind because he was older and less able finally suggested we say another prayer. Immediately after, he walked off on his own into the dark without saying a word when asked where he was going and returned with the child about 20 minutes later. Told us the spirit told him exactly where he was, sitting on a rock at the bottom of a pass about a mile or so past camp. We never figured how he couldn't hear us and why he was too stupid to start a fire.
