What's new

Conley wants to resign. “Utah’s got me.”

Huh.... Rudy was starting by midway through year 2... could have been a backup in year one but we had Ty Corbin. Rudy was extremely athletic for his size.

There are plenty of guys that can protect the rim at the level required to be a backup. There are also lots of guys that could provide something different than a traditional rim protecting center. If we are saying Udoka is going to be Rudy's replacement someday... okay... but we also have him under contract for 5+ years... soooooo a little premature to find his replacement.
Agree to disagree. These guys are very few and far between and you grab them when you can, particularly when you find someone with the athleticism of Dok and your entire system is predicated on having this kind of person.

And finding guys that can shoot and dribble is much easier than finding a rim protector. Much easier. I get that the pick has risk but I love the gamble. Dok has the length and more athleticism than Rudy and it took us multiple years with a lot of work for Rudy to develop. I hope in two years Dok replaces Favs.
This is flat out false... sorry. Sometimes people just say things and they sound cute so they seem like facts.

Finding guys that can shoot pass and dribble is much more essential number 1 because you need 3-4 guys on the court at all times that can do it. So the market needs like 3x-4x more of them than rim protectors.

Super myth I keep hearing spewed... finding a rim protector is hard. Well if you look at the top 10 guys in the league in blocks on a per minute basis (300 minute minimum) we could have signed or traded for 5 of them this offseason if we wanted to. All would cost less than Favs too. Jarrett Allen - a young, already functional center - was traded for a late first and a second rounder.

They are not... see post above.

I mean we GOT a guy that can shoot and dribble in that draft. It just wasn't one of the guys that these people spent two years discussing so they sore.
Sweet we got Hughes... He's on a two year deal. So if we see him next year and he's good we immediately have to pay him. If he doesn't get any run he can just walk and we won't know what we have.

The order of things is important. I'd gladly take Hughes on a four year deal over Udoka. Also since you need 3-4x the amount of guards and wings in this league it doesn't hurt to take two bites at the apple.

Desmond Bane is basically putting up the same numbers as Joe Harris per minute... His TS% is a bit lower but he also doesn't get to play with 3 superstars. His team is better on both ends of the floor when he is on the court... so it isn't just empty calories.

But please keep dreaming about all them backup minutes Udoka gonna give us in three years.

This is also not hindsight... I was asked to pick the guy I would have taken over Udoka in the draft thread... I said I'd take Bane.

Cmon HH, you know blocks per game dont equal quality rim protection.

I think finding a quality starting center is harder than finding wing rotation players who can dribble/pass/shoot ( though I will conceded that if you're saying that as in the player is a quality playmaker and not just a guy who can drive in a straight line when presented with an opportunity)

I also think finding big men who can both guard the elite bigs and not kill your defense against the NBA 3pt shooting revolution is also very very hard. And I think with Utah that needs all of that from their big, plus being a strong IQ player who can operate out of the short roll and be a vertical rim threat.

And the Jarrett Allen thing is funny. He got undervalued because the Nets lost leverage because teams knew they had to get rid of him plus the super stupid DJ over Allen favoritism to appease KD. I mean, Jordan Clarkson got traded for an overpaid bust and a couple of late 2nd rounders (fact check me on that lmao, at least one was late)

I am aware yes... but its an indicator that they can function as a rim protector in short stints at least. So that 50% number doesn't even include the other guys that protect the rim in other ways... being in good position, taking charges, etc.

There is also the other side of this where maybe we could get a stretch option.

I might have been able to talk myself into the pick before we signed Favs. I know the order of operations here... but Jazz management likely knew they were getting Favs and re-signing Rudy.

Dont worry. They got Hughes who is going to be better than Bane.

If he re-signs, I hope it is one year at a time. Include a no-trade clause if we have to. He has been a revelation this year, and I think his contract year status is at least partly the reason why. And if he's so happy here, he should be happy getting paid one year at a time.

Lakers did the same with Caldwell-Pope a few times. Slightly overpaid him on a one year deal that included a no-trade clause.

Jesus Christ you are a real piece of work.

"Hey Mike Conley, please take this Kenatvious Caldwell-Pope style deal while leading the NBA in +/- and being our 2nd best player this season." - Lopo
